British Airways First Class Review 2019

is first Class better than business in ba

What can we say, First Class is always going to better, is it not?

In general, you are correct but what happens when the same airline brings out a ground-breaking new Business Class product which puts out there the question again on most people’s lips – First Class vs Business Class – which is better?

Got you thinking?..

Comparison & Conclusion

As stated officially by British airways, First Class passengers receive 1 extra 32kg of checked baggage per adult & children.

Yes, we agree any additional checked baggage allowance is better to have more, but do any passengers actually need any more than 2 x 23kg of checked baggage each?

Its a nice to have but in reality, how many First Class passengers actually use the full allowance 3 x 32kg allowance each is what we ask ourselves!

British airways First vs Business Class Lounges

airways concorde room heathrow

Business Class Lounge access

BA galleries lounge business t5

There are actually 3 Business Class lounges to choose from at Heathrow T5. 2 in the A Building, and one in the B Satellite Terminal.

If you want a more relaxing experience then the lounge in B terminal is recommended.

The Galleries Club lounges includes hot and cold food, self-serve tea and coffee, an open bar, showers.

The main Galleries Lounge in T5 is the largest of all 3 lounges at T5 consisting of seating for over 800 passengers. It’s located on the top floor of the concourse, above the Galleries First and Concorde Room lounge. This lounge is the most used go business class passengers at T5 and is often very busy.

The food and drink offerings vary, and include sandwiches, pasta, a salad bar, and several varieties of wine, champagne on request.

Comparison & Conclusion

The First Class lounges at T5 win “hands down” between First and Business class.

The Concorde room is Iconic in style and luxury. Galleries First to a slightly lesser extent but still excellent.

Include into the mix a Free 15 minute Elemis Spa treatment for First Class passengers, the Business Class Lounge experiences do not come close to the offerings of First.

First / Business Class Priority Boarding

Oneworld Emerald members

Business Class:

Priority Group 2

Business Class Passengers

Executive Club Silver members

Oneworld Sapphire members

Comparison & Conclusion

First class passengers or known officially as Group 1 always board the plane before Business Class.

To board the plane first before any other passengers will always be a Perk. In reality we are talking about a difference of less than 5 minutes until Business class passengers board.

Due to the First class cabins comprising of a limited number of seats, its not long before Business class boards and can be literally a matter of minutes behind.

First vs Business Class Cabins

Ba first class cabin

As above,  First Class Cabins will always feel more intimate due to the lesser amount of seats installed.

Some First Class Cabins consist of only 8 seats, that’s a lot of space.

These cabins will always look & feel spacious and in general provide a better ambience. Privacy and comfort are of paramount importance within First Class Class have been designed with this in mind.

Also, First class cabins will general have a higher standard of fittings, lighting, seating and facilities.

However,  this is where the New BA Business Class Suite cabins being installed on a Series of brand new A350 aircraft are starting to make people ask again “First class vs Business Class – which is better now”?

Ba Club Suite seat

The “New kid on the block”, the British airways Club Suite has the usual critics of BA eating their words.

The new BA Club Suite layout is more like a First class cabin. As an additional benefit, the club suite has a door encasing you in your own private suite, no BA First class product offers this benefit.

In fact, most people once seeing the pictures of the new BA Club Suite are asking how can First Class on the same carrier beat this new product?

The One Horse Race has a new Contender now!

First Class Seats

BA First class seat 777

There’s no beating a First Class Seat. You get comfort, style, privacy and all the latest tech.

The space provided to just one First Class Seat can almost be as much as 2 normal seats on the same plane. In fact, if you like a window seat, how about having two Windows to look out of.

Fancy your own wardrobe, you get that in First. Fancy a large screen flat TV, yes you guessed it..

A BA First Class Seat reclines into a fully flat bed by controls within your space. A standard BA First Class seat in Pitch ranges from 73 inches on the 787-9 all the way up to 79 inches on the 747-400.

Width of a First Class seat is on average 1-2 inches wider than a standard Business Class seat.

You also receive improved degrees of recline compared to Business Class,  Electric seat controls to adjust recline position, legrest and lumbar support & Laptop Power Ports.

BA Business Class Club Suite Seats

BA Club suite seat a350

Now, this is where it gets really interesting.

If you take a look at the picture above of the new British airways Club Suite Business Class seat, you will probably notice some similarities to BA First Class seats.

Like with First Class you are now getting a very personal, large space with BA Business Class. It’s a suite unlike with First class.

You get a door to fully enclose you in own personal space, you do not get that with First class.

You receive a brand new seat designed with comfort and styling in mind. You get a wardrobe area just like First, side storage compartments, just like First.

New, large flat screen TV’s, I won’t go on…

Comparison & Conclusion

In comparison, the new BA Club Suite seat is as close as it could get to First Class without being called First.

Where as First Class still has the edge in the sheer amount of personal space, there is not much in it now in comparison to the new Business product.

The seat, privacy, Technology, comfort and style is hot on the heels of First Class. In fact, many people are now questioning the existence of British airways First Class with the new Club Suite about to be launched.

First Class Dining vs Business Class Dining

British airways First Class dining

Now, First Class dining starts to pull back out In front in the Race again.

First Class dining offers simply the best in airline quality of food & drink.

All First Class passengers of British airways receive Breakfast, mid morning meals, lunch, afternoon tea & Dinner servings.

Main meals are accompanied by delicious starters, whilst the cabin crew prepare your selected main course. Followed by tempting desserts and or the finest cheese platters, accompanied by seasonal fresh fruit and the finest chocolate.

All passengers can also choose their preferred meals in advance by logging into their British airways executive club account and selecting which meals they would prefer on their flights.

BA First Afternoon Tea

BA first class afternoon tea

If your lucky enough to be flying in the afternoon you will be receiving afternoon tea on board.

This consist of finger sandwiches served on bone China plates, cream tea including scones, jam and clotted cream.

Champagne is served at afternoon tea to compliment a pot of tea served alongside.

British airways Business Class Dining

BA Business Class food

BA Business class now offer a new service concept was recently launched in Club World which will see the cabin crew hand running most meals or using new carts.

You will have to order your starter at the same time as no longer are service trolleys in the cabin. Starters and desserts are now chosen from the new carts in the cabin.

Expect 3 Course lunches & dinners. Breakfasts, mid morning & afternoon snacks.

All dining options are served up in bone China with real cutlery.

Comparisons & Conclusions

BA First Class once again wins this one. You simply receive a better class & standard of dining than in Business Class.

To receive afternoon tea including Champagne wins the race by lengths.

BA First Class vs Business Class Amenity Kits

BA First Class Amenity kit female
First Class Amenity Kit Female

Once again BA First Class wins.

The First Class BA amenity kits come in two forms, Male & Female.

The BA First Class Amenity kits are made by Liberty of London containing high class, superior quality contents. What is unique also is how they supply Male & Female versions.

First Class Amenity kit male mens

BA First Class vs Business Class Service

Ba cabin crew

All British airways First class flights have dedicated cabin crew to look after all first class passengers requirements throughout their flight.

First Class has atleast 2 dedicated cabin Crew to every First Class per flight.

Business Class

All British airways Business class flights have dedicated cabin crew to look after all Business class passengers requirements throughout their flight.

The difference between First & Business Class will be that the crew serving Business Class will also share responsibilities serving other passes in other cabins on the same flight.

Another Win for First Class…

Is paying £2036.00 per person to gain the benefits of First Class vs Business Class worth it?

Final Comparisons & Conclusions – First Class vs Business Class

First Class vs Business Class BA

To put it simply, British airways First Class is an outstanding product and especially when flying from London Heathrow.

From the outset, being able to select your favourite seats at the time of booking for Free through to arriving at the airport.

Being treated like a V.I.P as soon as you enter the First Wing, going through security is like a breeze and then on to those amazing lounges including the Iconic “Concorde Room” to fine dining and high end drinks.

Boarding first before any other passengers to a spacious, luxurious cabin to sitting down on a seat bigger and comfier than any other on the plane.

How can First Class be Beaten?

BA First Class bed

In short, you can’t beat BA First Class by another BA product.

However, when it comes to cabins and seating, the new British airways Club Suite launching soon on the A350-1000 aircraft is getting pretty close to the same product in First Class but at a fraction of the cost.

The cost difference between the two products is immense. As stated in our article, you can fly two people in the Club Suites towards First and still have a cool £638.00 in the bank.

Rumors are also circulating that BA may look to reduce the amount of aircraft with First class installed in the future.

Is this why British airways has launched such a great new Business Class product with its Club Suite?

Will the new BA Club Suite replace First Class on many routes in the future?

Ba Club Suite seat

Who know’s at this stage but BA are definitely upping their game at last after enduring countless years of criticism of an aging long haul business product in the form of Club World.

We hope you have enjoyed reading our article today, we would love to read your comments on this topic First Class vs Business Class.

We will leave you with some questions.

Which is better in your opinion – BA First or BA Club Suites?

Will BA get rid of First Class in the future?

How to Fly British Airways First Class – 40,000 Avios Points + £27.50

Fly British airways First Class – 40,000 Avios Points + £27.50

British Airways First Class is up there on most people’s “Bucket List” of flights to take atleast once in their lifetime!

The problem with flying British airways First Class are the eyewatering charges.

Desirable flights usually come with undesirable costs these days…

Fear not, you can actually fly British airways First Class for as little as only 40,000 Avios Points + £27.50 taxes from London Heathrow. This flight would usually cost you one way, per person £3249.00.

Before you think 40,000 Avios + £27.50 for BA First Class , yeah right.. This must be an upgrade charge from paying for a full fare in Club world.

Your wrong, this is no Upgrade charge. This is a full British Airways First Class fare from outbound to final destination.

What do I get when Booking British Airways First Class?

Instant Seat Selection

BA First Class 777

At the Point of Booking your First Class tickets, all passengers automatically receive accessibility within their British airways executive club account to select which seat they prefer to be seated in within the First cabin.

Now, this may not sound much of a Perk to many but on British Airways, First Class fares are the only flights that you can select your seat at the time of booking or after for Free.

The only other way passengers flying on BA can select seats at the time of booking will be either paying to select your seat, using avios points or if you are British airways Silver / Gold Status Member.

To be able select your own seats at the time of booking is a definite perk, its no fun sitting next to a stranger for the duration of your flight.

This for me is one of the best Perks of flying BA First Class.

To only have to use 40,000 avios points plus £27.50 in taxes works out amazing value and you wont find better out there.

Later in this post we can teach you how to earn that amount of avios points for under £20 with a few tips and tricks utilising a credit card introduction bonus point offer which will also allow you to earn a 2-4-1 voucher so you could take someone with you on this First class flight.

The proof below for you!

BA First Heathrow to moscow

London Heathrow to Moscow

Now, Moscow may not be on everyone’s Top 10 List of places to visit in the world but to be able to experience BA First for such low amounts of avios points and taxes cheaper than a take-away, its certainly worth a trip to Moscow atleast once in your lifetime.

How to collect 40,000 avios points for less than £20.00

British airways American Express card vs BA Amex Premium Plus card

If your not already aware, American Express in the UK offer some extremely generous sign up bonuses when you take out one of their point earning cards.

To be able to collect 40,000 avios points, and as an extra bonus of a 2-4-1 Companion voucher which is enough to to fly you and a partner on BA First Class to Moscow, you will need to take out the British airways American Express Premium Plus card.

The British airways american express premium plus card offers new customers as a sign up bonus of 25,000 avios avios when you spend £3000 in the first three months of taking the card out.

But you still need 15,000 more avios points to fly this British airways First class route..

British airways Amex companion voucher

To collect the 2-4-1 BA Amex Companion Voucher the requirements are you need to spend £10,000 within 12 Months.

If you spend £10,000 within 12 Months of taking out the BAPP Card , you will receive the benefits detailed below:

  • 25,000 avios points when you spend your first £3000. (26,000 click our Links)
  • Spend another £7000 and receive a free 2-4-1 Companion Voucher
  • Every £1.00 spent on the card earns 1.5 Avios points – £10,000 spent = 15,000 avios points
  • 15,000 + 25,000 avios = enough Avios to fly One Way in First Class.

You said for less than £20.00…

The British airways American Express Premium Plus card costs £195.00 in annual fee’s.

However, this card comes with refundable pro-rate fee’s so if you have large purchases to make which could total £10,000 in your first month,  you will only be charged the pro-rate fees approximately £16.00 for the month.

You can then wait to receive the confirmation of your 2-4-1 Companion Voucher which can take approximately one week then cancel the BAPP card.

This will result in a refund of 11 months of your annual fees back to you to your account.

However, there is catch!

The catch is not connected with receiving the avios points, but paying the tax element when using your 2-4-1 Companion Voucher.

American express have a rule that to pay for any taxes applicable when using the voucher, the taxes have to be paid using an American Express card. It does not have to be card you received the voucher on but any Amex card.

The solution we have found to this small issue would be to downgrade the BA Amex Premium Plus card down to fee free British airways American Express card & keep this card forever like we do.

BA Premium Economy 777 flight map
BA World Traveller Plus Boeing 777 flight map

The aircraft British Airways regularly fly on this route are the Boeing 777-200 which comprises of World Traveller (Economy) with 203 seats, World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy) with 24 Reclining seats & Club World (Business) with 48 flat beds.

BA Premium Economy 777

BA World Traveller Plus – Our Opinion

This was our very first time we had flown in BA Premium Economy class.

We had paid our Travel Agent an extra £498 each to upgrade from World Traveller (Economy) to cover our outbound & inbound flights.

We had only ever flown World Traveller (Economy) in the past but in Economy you sort of know what to expect, you have no real high expectations, cheap & cheerful,  No Frills…

This upgraded cabin was high on our wish list and high in our expectations!

What does premium economy mean on British Airways?

British airways Premium Economy is the next Upgraded Cabin from Economy. You do not receive Lounge access however you do get Priority boarding, a slightly larger, reclinable seat with a footrest and a larger, flat screen IFE system.

Also, an improved dining experience, an extra meal & complimentary drinks & snacks.

What is the difference between economy and premium economy?

The difference between British airways Premium Economy & Economy Class are the improved wider Reclinable seats, the priority boarding, the extras such as improved meals, a larger baggage allowance consisting of 2 x 32kg per passenger, noise cancelling headphones, laptop power supplies and a more, Intimate cabin experience.

Are premium economy seats worth it?

Yes, you receive a wider, more luxurious seat with a larger pitch, footrest, headrest and a better recline including improved ergonomics. Movable armrests allow more movement & the improved recline / headrest allow enough comfort to be able to sleep. Seat Power sockets are also installed suitable for laptops and other electronic devices for your entertainment.

How much more expensive is premium economy?

Premium Economy can cost as much as 60% – 80% more than Economy. It will be cheaper to book the upgraded cabin at the time of booking rather than wait until being offered an upgrade at the airport check-in. Sale fares offer all customers upgraded cabins usually at lower costs.

BA Lounge Access

airways concorde room heathrow

Before our first ever BA Premium Economy flight, we assumed paying that much to Upgrade our cabin class, we would automatically receive some type of Lounge access.

No, unfortunately after a bit of research online, we quickly discovered that lounge access was not applicable to tickets issued in World Traveller Plus. However, when you research other airlines, we quickly discovered that Premium economy class does not generally ever come with Complimentary Lounge access.

This policy appears pretty standard across all airlines in this class of fare including similar offerings from Virgin Atlantic. What we discovered after our trip was that you only get lounge access if you fly BA First or Business Class or if you hold BA Silver / Gold Status or equivalent from another OneWorld carrier.

You can however purchase Lounge access without flying in First / Club World but this will not include access to any of the official BA Lounges.

Lounge access can be purchased online or usually at the door of most pay to enter airport lounges.

All you do is enter the airport you want Lounge access for and companies such as Lounge Buddy will display all available options & prices online. Typical Lounge access will cost approx £20-£25 each. This amount can be dramatically reduced if you fly regularly & want Lounge access by purchasing an annual pass from these lounge companies.

Premium Economy Priority Boarding

One good perk that we found with BA Premium Economy tickets was that all passengers receive Priority boarding.

You do however have to wait until all passengers in Club World / First Class have boarded first before your cabin class is called up and you can begin boarding the plane.

This a great benefit in our opinion, to board the plane before the main bulk of passengers flying in Economy. We boarded our plane with the smaller amount of passengers within our cabin only.

This gives you enough time to store your hand baggage away and be seated before the main bulk of passengers enter down the same aisle.

Priority Boarding – Our Experience

We made our way with great excitement to fly for our very first time in World Traveller Plus to the selected boarding gate. When we arrived at our boarding gate we found ourselves in an area consisting of lots of seats and even more passengers waiting around to board.

We quickly found some spare seats and eagerly awaiting our boarding access. Club World passengers were called up first, this took about 10 x minutes in total for all the business class passengers to board first.

Then Premium Economy passengers were instructed to start boarding, this benefit does make it feel special being able to board before economy passengers.

It was a fairly organised boarding experience, with all Business class passengers already seated before we entered the plane. This boarding experience did start our journey off on a good setting and made us feel more relaxed and not feel hurried.

So far, not that much difference in our opinion than flying in World Traveller except for priority boarding before Economy passengers.

BA Business Class Club World 777

Entering the Boeing 777 you turn right from the Galley but I did manage to a quick peek at the Club World business class cabin located to the left at the front of the aircraft. Club World or Business Class looked completely different to Premium Economy, firstly each seat is designed to have its own space.

The BA Club World Seats located next to the Window & aisle seats have separation panels for Privacy. The Seats are larger and are almost like pods with fully flat beds. They are also in a Configuration of 2 / 2 / 2, in World Traveller Plus the configuration is 2 / 4 / 2 seating. This gives you an idea of the extra personal space you get in the Club World Cabin.

For our next trip, we managed to experience Club World using only Avios points & taxes.

Read our Review of our First Club World experience from London to the Maldives here – BA Club World Review Gatwick to Maldives

BA 777-200 British airways Club world seats
British Airways Club World seats

Entering the Premium Economy cabin and after seeing Business class, we felt a little disappointed to be honest.

In our opinion, the Premium Economy cabin looks exactly the same as Economy except there are only two seats on the outside of the aisles next to the windows instead of three seats in Economy.

One added bonus in this cabin was the mood lighting, this was turned on once the main cabin lights were turned off during our night-time flight. It gave the whole cabin a relaxed feeling and quite contemporary.

Reading the latest BA news, it appears that the Premium Economy Cabin & Service have received an over-haul with lots of money invested by BA to improve the customer experience. This includes a thorough deep clean on all aircraft, upgraded cabin interiors, improved seating and a better food and drink catering experience.

British airways Premium Economy seats

BA Premium Economy Seating Layout

Before our Pre-flight departure, we were automatically assigned seats at the front of the cabin facing the Galley wall. This made it feel like we had extra leg room but not 100% sure if we actually did.

On British Airways you have to pay for your preferred Seat Selection. The only class of cabin which gets automatic seat selection at the booking stage is First Class. Purchasing seat selection on Premium Economy varies from £16 – £30 each, and that’s each way.

Not being able to select your seat at the time of booking in our opinion is a poor standard. This basically means that potentially if you book flights together, you could be seated away from each other. In theory, i have been advised this usually does not happen but not 100% guaranteed.

What we did not know at the time of booking our upgrades via our Travel agent was that if we had opened a British Airways Executive account, we could have logged in 24 x hours before our flight and selected our preferred seats.

BA offer all blue status account holders the option before you fly to pre-select your preferred seats but only 24 x hours before departure for Free.

You can however pay to pre-select your preferred seats at the time of booking by paying a fee.

The Seats – Premium Economy

British airways Premium Economy seats seating b777-200
British airways Premium Economy seats 777-200

The Seats are slightly wider than in Economy and you do get a bit more leg room with movable foot rests.

The WT+ seat is officially 18.5 inch wide with a larger seat pitch. Economy seats are 17.5 inches wide and so not a great deal of difference. The seats are Reclinable and do offer better comfort than Economy when trying to sleep.

You do get a Blanket & Cushion, Noise cancelling headphones, In-flight entertainment system & a very basic Amenity bag containing an eye mask, toothbrush, toothpaste, Flight socks and earplugs which looked remotely similar to those in Economy also.

The Cabin is smaller and feels slightly more intimate than Economy. BA Seats in this cabin have a modern Navy Blue & lighter Blue shades with Silver metal trims with adjustable headrests and moveable armrests.

The Seats we found were actually quite comfortable and helped us catch atleast a few hours sleep before arriving at our destination.

Food & Drink Dining Options

British airways premium economy dining

You do get as standard two meals and complimentary drinks on board.

We opted for the Chicken dish which came in the standard tin foil trays with a complimentary bread roll & butter. To be honest, it looked and tasted exactly the same as a similar Chicken dish we had eaten in Economy before.

A small chocolate dessert which was nice and a drink were offered with both meals served. The meal orders were taken quickly and the cabin crew served our selected meals shortly afterwards. We were offered Tea or Coffee twice during our flight time, Tea for me never tastes the same on a plane so I opted for white coffee instead.

No Nespresso or Latte’s served here but we were served perfectly drinkable filter coffee.

However, we did take up the offer of the complimentary sparkling wine, spirits and soft drinks offered throughout our flight duration. The sparkling wine was nice and came served up in British Airways branded glassware.

Cabin Crew Service

Ba cabin crew 777

By the time we were in the air, we did notice a lot of initial activity by the Cabin crew on board in our cabin.

Complimentary Drinks were served up quickly, then a long interval came when we did not see any Cabin crew except for one Stewardess making her way quickly down the aisle through to Club World. It looked like the staff on board were a little stretched.

Overall, the Cabin crew serving us were pleasant and professional.

In Flight Entertainment (IFE)

British airways offer all seats with the In-Flight Entertainment system by means of a touch screen or controlled entertainment console.

The IFE Flat screens are located in the rear of the seat in front of you or in our case, a swivel style movable screen attached to the side of our seat as we were at the front of the cabin.

The In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) contains lots of the latest films, documentaries, television, music, audio books and games to keep you occupied during your flight. We opted to watch a latest Cinema Blockbuster film and after we were kept occupied watching a series of comedy episodes and music documentaries.

The Noise Cancelling headphones worked well at blocking out the background aircraft noise and were very comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Baggage allowance

BA World Traveller plus baggage allowance

All BA Premium Economy passengers receive as part of the upgraded fare an improved baggage allowance.

This includes for each passenger in world traveller plus the option to take on board with you two bags, one full-sized cabin bag and one additional bag such as a laptop holder etc.

The full-sized cabin bag cannot exceed 56cm in height by 45cm in width and not exceed 25cm in-depth. This larger of the two hand baggage items must be stored away in the overhead lockers.

Hand Baggage allowance

The smaller hand baggage item must not exceed 30cm in height by 40cm in width and not exceed 25cm in-depth. This hand baggage item must be stored under the seat in front of you.

BA hand baggage allowance

Checked Baggage allowance

All adults are allowed up to two checked luggage items each in this Cabin class. The allowance per bag is 23kg each bag, per person. This same allowance also applies to children aged between 2 -12 years old. This is one additional checked baggage per person more than you are allocated when flying in Economy Class.

Verdict / Recommendations

Is it worth the extra cost from Economy?

In our personal opinion, its a tough decision to make and depends on a few different factors.

If your cost conscious then probably No!

If you want a few extra benefits / comforts such as being able to recline a slightly wider, comfier seat so you can catch some sleep if your on an overnight flight then we would say Yes.

The cabin interiors are better, you get extra complimentary drinks and an extra meal and snacks and priority boarding.

To pay approximately £250 each and each way for a few extras like a slightly bigger reclining seat, slightly more leg room and priority boarding maybe worth the additional fees charged.

Reading the latest news from BA, it appears that they have plans to improve the Premium Economy experience with improved dining options, improved cabin interiors, bigger touch screen IFE and a bigger recline on the seats. These improvements are only being fitted to some aircraft first, then a further roll out of improvements across most of the fleet at a later date.

Even with the new improvements, we still sometimes struggle to think that the new World Traveller Plus experience will be worth the additional fees charged at present.

You can however find these upgraded seats in one of the regular BA World Sales at a greater saving, if you find these on your chosen route then we would recommend this Cabin at the reduced sale prices.

We would only fly in BA Premium Economy again if there were no availability in Club World and we would definitely pay for Lounge access this time to make the whole experience as best it could possibly get.

We would however strongly recommend purchasing Premium Economy seats in one of the regular BA Sale’s with the option to upgrade your seats to Club World using avios points.

You can also fly on British Airways in Premium Economy / Club World or even First Class using a 2-4-1 Companion Voucher where you get One Passenger free when using avios points.

American Express British Airways Credit Card – BA Amex 2019 Review

American Express British Airways Credit Card BA Amex 2019 Review

Today we Review for you the Free American Express British Airways BA Amex Credit Card issued in the U.K.

Also known as the BA Amex Credit Card, we will set out below all the benefits of the Amex British airways Card including the Great Avios Bonus Point Sign Up Offer, the Free Companion Voucher known as the 2-4-1, and all the Tips & Tricks to get the very best out of your card.

BA Amex Blue Credit Card

Before we get started, I regularly read online people stating this is not such a good card towards its Big Brother, the American Express Premium Plus Card which costs £195 a year.

I keep asking myself why, and you should too!

The British airways American Express Card is FREE, No Annual Fee, its costs you nothing and that’s forever..

You also do not have to have a large income anymore to be accepted for an Amex Card. A while ago American Express relaxed their minimum income requirements.

Every penny counts for us and annual fees are a major factor when we decide on taking out a new credit card, this should also factor highly in your decisions also.

Why should you pay £195.00 a year for a credit card, when you can get another card doing a similar thing for FREE?

Let’s start by looking at all the benefits of the British airways American Express Card.

British Airways American Express Card Key Benefits

British airways American Express Card Annual Fee

Ba amex card earning aviosAs we have already stated above, the BA Amex Card comes with no annual fee.

For me, this is one of the “Stand Out” benefits of this card. Why would you want to pay £195.00 a year for a credit card that only offers you a few more benefits than one for free?

With all fee free credit cards, we take them out and keep them forever in the wallet or in the drawer to use later. It doesn’t matter if you do not use the card for a while, your not paying anything for it.

BA Amex Blue Card Avios Earning Rate

British airways American Express sign up bonus

The British airways American Express card earns Avios loyalty points at a rate of 1 point per £1.00 spent.

Now, considering this card is completely free with No annual fee’s ever, this makes this card extremely generous when you compare it to other avios point earning cards on the market today.

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card, Review found by clicking the link here > American Express Gold Card Review < earns Avios Points at the same rate but you only get your first year for Free.

Year 2 and every membership year after for the Amex Gold Card will cost you £140.00 in fee’s.

American express is becoming more & more popular these days and many retailers are starting to accept Amex on the high street and Online for payment, so using the card to rack up those avios points will never be a problem for you.

The British Airways American Express Companion Voucher

British airways Amex companion voucher

By far the biggest perk of the American express British airways card is the Free British airways Companion Voucher.

The British Airways Companion Voucher enables the account holder to receive 2-4-1 travel with a Companion Voucher when you spend £20,000 each membership year on your British airways American Express Card, expires after 12 months.

This allows you, as the account holder with a Companion Voucher to take a companion with you on the same flight and cabin when you redeem your Avios Points for a British Airways avios reward flight. Taxes, fees and carrier charges do apply though.

The Amex Companion Voucher is a 2 for 1 saving on the total amount of avios points required for an avios point reward flight.

How to Book an Award Flight using your BA Companion Voucher

Calculate how many Avios Points are required for you to take a trip entirely using Avios points return and the second person Flying with you (Companion) flies completely Free, Its like a Buy one, Get one Free offer!

Remember that the entire award booking will be subject to taxes to pay.

To book a British airways Avios award ticket/s, navigate within your British airways Executive Club and follow the images displayed below:

British airways executive club login

Ensure you select from the drop down box on the left hand side of your British airways Executive Club Club page to display “Book with Avios“.

Enter your departure airport from within the UK (BA Companion Vouchers only work when departing from the UK). Then your destination airport, select Return and your preferred dates.

Next, you can use the “Reward Flight Finder” or “Search and Book” sections as above to find an overview of availability on your chosen dates or see availability for your chosen cabin class across all months up to a year in advance.

Next, select your inbound flight in your chosen cabin class and date and press Continue.

British airways American Express 241 voucher

You will then end up at your Avios Point Reward Booking summary page displaying all your selected dates and your selected cabin class of choice.

If you see the above example booking we carried out, it displays the total amount of Avios Points required and the total taxes to pay.

When using the American Express British airways Companion Voucher in your BAEC account, the total of Avios Points required for this booking would be halved so only 148,000 Avios points instead of 296,000.

The above example booking used First Class, Return fares for two passengers. Flying first Class using the BA Companion 2-4-1 Voucher in our opinion is the best value you can get when using a 2-4-1.(Cash Price £7000).

You still would have to pay £1,335.92 in taxes when using the BA Companion Voucher.

On your booking summary page there will be displayed a message if you would like to use your Companion Voucher.

BA Amex 241 companion voucher

Simply press on “Redeem” and your Companion Voucher will be applied to your booking and will automatically update the required amount of avios points required deduction 50%.

How to get the Best Value from the BA Companion Voucher

BA FIRST CLASS CABINS

In our opinion the best value when using your Companion Voucher would be to find availability on BA First Class.

Award availability using Avios Points can have its benefits. You can still find availability using points and your Companion Voucher when your chosen flight dates are all sold out.

Another good value for using avios points could be in “Peak Seasons” when flight prices are hiked high saving you thousands of pounds.

Economy Class is not worth it due to the taxes you still have to pay, choosing Economy could come out at roughly the same price of paying cash for the same fare ticket but at the same time wasting thousands of avios points & the 2-4-1 voucher.

You can hold up to 2 BA Companion Vouchers at any one time in your account. Or have Companion Vouchers in your account and Companion Vouchers in your partners BA account but still fly together in the same flights.

By having more than one 2-4-1 vouchers available means you can book family members on your flights.

How to Get a BA Amex Card Companion 2-4-1 Voucher for Spending £10,000 (Not £20,000)

BA Amex upgrade 241 voucher

American express allow you to upgrade your British airways American express Card to the British airways Premium Plus Card. This can be completed within your account or by calling Amex Customer Services to action.

Spend £10,000 on your British airways American Express Card, upgrade to the BA Premium Plus Card and shortly after you will receive an email notification that you have earnt a BA Companion Voucher.

At this point, to ensure you do not pay any fees on the BA Premium Plus Card, simply downgrade your card back to the BA Amex Card you originated with.

This tactic works and is common knowledge and allowed by Amex. Using this tip results in you receiving the same Companion Voucher issued by the £195.00 a year BA Amex Premium Plus Card but on the fee free card.

Now you know this trick, why would you pay £195.00 a year when you get almost the same benefits for Free?

British Airways American Express Card vs BA Amex Premium Plus Card

British airways American Express card vs BA Amex Premium Plus card

In this section we look at the British airways American Express Card vs the BA Amex Premium Plus Credit Card as a Comparison in Benefits & Value for Money.

As detailed above, we have been discussing mainly all the benefits of the BA Amex Blue Card, now lets look at the Black BA Amex Premium Plus benefits.

The British airways Premium Plus Card Benefits

26,000 Bonus Avios Points when you sign up and spend £3,000 in the first 3 Months of membership by clicking here> BA Amex Sign Up Bonus <Otherwise you will only earn 25,000 Bonus Avios Points Bonus.

You will earn 1.5 Avios Point for every £1.00 you spend using the BA Premium Plus Amex Card.

You receive a Companion Voucher otherwise known as the 2-4-1 voucher which entitles you when you buy One flight ticket using Avios Points, you get a Free ticket for your companion when you spend £10,000 a year on your BAPP Card, expiry 24 Months.

£195.00 Annual Fee, each & every Membership year.

Regular Bonus Point offers / Cashback offers in your account.

Free Travel Accident insurance cover protects you for up to £75,000 on public transport when you buy your ticket using your BA Amex Card.

24/7 Amex Customer Service even outside of the U.K.

Notice any similarities above to the BA Amex Blue Card?

BA Amex vs BA Premium Plus

So, the only difference in benefits we can see between the British airways American Express card vs the British airways Premium Plus Card are:

BAPP – 25,000 extra Avios Points but you need to spend £3000 in your first 3 Months of membership

BA Amex – 5,000 Avios Points when you spend £1000 in your first 3 Months of Membership.

BAPP – 1.5 Avios Points per £1.00 spent

BA Amex – 1.0 Avios Points per £1.00 spent

£195.00 annual fee for 20,000 extra Avios Points + 0.5 extra Avios Points per £1.00 spent.

My personal opinion is that 20,000 extra avios points plus 0.5 extra Avios Points per £1.00 spent does not justify £195.00 in annual fee’s!

Our Verdict / Recommendations

British airways American Express card vs BA Amex Premium Plus card

When you compare the two cards side by side for benefits, there is not a lot between the two in our opinion.

For the £195.00 annual fee your getting 20,000 extra avios and 0.5 extra avios on your spend. You could argue that having to spend £10,000 on the BAPP card will get you an extra 5,000 avios points from your spend = 25,000 Avios Points in total for £195.00.

Using our Tip, simply by Upgrading your British airways American Express Credit Card to the BA Amex Premium Plus Card by one click in your account or by calling up Amex Customer Services, you can have exactly the Same BA Companion 2-4-1 Voucher with an expiry date of 24 Months instead of 12 Months currently offered by the BA Blue Amex card.

All you need to remember is to downgrade your BAPP card back to your BA Amex card once you have been notified your 2-4-1 Companion voucher is ready to use in your British airways executive club. If you do this before the end of your first month of having the BAPP Card, you will not pay any Pro-rata fee’s applicable.

The Rules when paying for the Tax element of your 2-4-1 voucher redemption are that you have to pay using your BA Amex card. In reality you can use any Amex card but best to keep the BA Amex to pay, remember its free!

Usually you will not even find these type of fares if you depart from Germany which incurs the added costs and hassle of repositioning yourself from the U.K. to Europe first to catch your departure flight.

You will benefit from the great Lufthansa Business Class Lounges at London, earn a stack of Miles & More Lufthansa mile points which can be used to redeem against future Star Alliance airline flights or use back on Lufthansa flights. Just remember Lufthansa Miles & More points expire after 36 months so earn & burn them quickly before they are gone.

To get this amazing Lufthansa flight offer price even lower, we can save you over £30.00 off the fare price we searched making the total cost of 2 people flying return from London to Hong Kong – £1958.00

We took a look for you at all the participating hotels in the bonus point offer to try to find the best value hotel still attracting the bonus 10,000 points per stay.

Before we go any further, we may need to remind you that Paris 5 Star Hotels Hotels do not generally come cheap. Hotels in Paris can range from £100 to £1000 a night and at the cheaper end of the scale, it will be usually a 3 Star accommodation.

After a fair bit of investigation, we discovered the lowest price for a 2 Night Stay, still attracting the bonus 10,000 Marriot Bonvoy Points was Hotel – Renaissance Paris Le Parc Trocadero.

The cheapest price based within the date restrictions of the offer – April 23 to July 2019 we could find, came out at a Total of €508.00 for a 2 Night Stay based on a Two Person occupancy. So, €254.00 a night or £219.00 a night.

£219.00 a night for a 5 Star Paris Hotel is actually quite good value. We would recommend booking rates this low as soon as possible as these prices will probably not be around for long.

To reduce the cost of this room, you could always use a Cashback Site such as Topcashback which currently are offering up to 5% Cashback on this booking. This 5% Cashback equates to approximately £21.00 back making the total cost in GBP – £417.00 for 2 people / 2 Nights stay.

Our Verdict / Recommendations

The Bonus Point offers from the British airways Executive Club eStore can be very generous.

If you take into consideration that British airways sell Avios Points at a rate of 1000 points for £33.00, this makes the Mindful Chef meal delivery box to cost you only 50p if you select the minimum amount of meals per week.

If you select Vegetarian meal options only, you can get it as low as £24.00, If you were to select this option you would be in profit by £9.00 and get 3 Meals for Free.

Three healthy balanced meals using the freshest and sustainably sourced UK Meat ingredients for only 50p is a bargain.

As with all meal delivery box subscriptions like this offer, always remember to cancel your subscription within your account as soon as your meals have been dispatched unless of course if you wish to continue with your meal delivery service.
