British Airways BA Premium Economy 777 2019 Review

Recently we flew on British Airways in Premium Economy and our Review here covers the Boeing 777 Gatwick to Mauritius, Non-Stop flight.

Our Full Review below covers in-depth the facilities onboard the BA World Traveller Plus Cabin Including the Seats, Dining, Service, Cost, Priority Boarding, Extra Luggage Allowance etc.

We also set out to cover in our review for you today, answers to questions regularly asked of us such as:

What does premium economy mean on British Airways?

What is the difference between economy and premium economy?

Are premium economy seats worth it & How much more expensive is BA premium economy?

Our BA World Traveller Plus Flight Review Introduction

BA Premium Economy is just one of the featured cabins flown on the non-stop flight from London Gatwick (LGW) to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (MRU) in Mauritius in the Indian ocean.

The Boeing 777 is one of most widely used aircraft by British airways across the world today. Chances are, if your flying on BA in World Traveller Plus, you will be Flying on the 777.

British airways fly three times a week from LGW to MRU from March to November, the days BA fly at this time of the year are Mondays, Thursdays & Saturdays. The frequency increases to five times a week from November to March and they fly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturday and Sundays.

Our flight duration on this route was approx 11 hours, 50 minutes and covers from London Gatwick to Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Intl airport in Nautical Miles – 6,045.

BA Premium Economy 777

BA World Traveller Plus – Our Opinion

This was our very first time we had flown in BA Premium Economy class.

We had paid our Travel Agent an extra £498 each to upgrade from World Traveller (Economy) to cover our outbound & inbound flights.

We had only ever flown World Traveller (Economy) in the past but in Economy you sort of know what to expect, you have no real high expectations, cheap & cheerful,  No Frills…

This upgraded cabin was high on our wish list and high in our expectations!

What does premium economy mean on British Airways?

British airways Premium Economy is the next Upgraded Cabin from Economy. You do not receive Lounge access however you do get Priority boarding, a slightly larger, reclinable seat with a footrest and a larger, flat screen IFE system.

Also, an improved dining experience, an extra meal & complimentary drinks & snacks.

What is the difference between economy and premium economy?

The difference between British airways Premium Economy & Economy Class are the improved wider Reclinable seats, the priority boarding, the extras such as improved meals, a larger baggage allowance consisting of 2 x 32kg per passenger, noise cancelling headphones, laptop power supplies and a more, Intimate cabin experience.

Are premium economy seats worth it?

Yes, you receive a wider, more luxurious seat with a larger pitch, footrest, headrest and a better recline including improved ergonomics. Movable armrests allow more movement & the improved recline / headrest allow enough comfort to be able to sleep. Seat Power sockets are also installed suitable for laptops and other electronic devices for your entertainment.

How much more expensive is premium economy?

Premium Economy can cost as much as 60% – 80% more than Economy. It will be cheaper to book the upgraded cabin at the time of booking rather than wait until being offered an upgrade at the airport check-in. Sale fares offer all customers upgraded cabins usually at lower costs.

BA Lounge Access

airways concorde room heathrow

Before our first ever BA Premium Economy flight, we assumed paying that much to Upgrade our cabin class, we would automatically receive some type of Lounge access.

No, unfortunately after a bit of research online, we quickly discovered that lounge access was not applicable to tickets issued in World Traveller Plus. However, when you research other airlines, we quickly discovered that Premium economy class does not generally ever come with Complimentary Lounge access.

This policy appears pretty standard across all airlines in this class of fare including similar offerings from Virgin Atlantic. What we discovered after our trip was that you only get lounge access if you fly BA First or Business Class or if you hold BA Silver / Gold Status or equivalent from another OneWorld carrier.

You can however purchase Lounge access without flying in First / Club World but this will not include access to any of the official BA Lounges.

Lounge access can be purchased online or usually at the door of most pay to enter airport lounges.

All you do is enter the airport you want Lounge access for and companies such as Lounge Buddy will display all available options & prices online. Typical Lounge access will cost approx £20-£25 each. This amount can be dramatically reduced if you fly regularly & want Lounge access by purchasing an annual pass from these lounge companies.

Premium Economy Priority Boarding

One good perk that we found with BA Premium Economy tickets was that all passengers receive Priority boarding.

You do however have to wait until all passengers in Club World / First Class have boarded first before your cabin class is called up and you can begin boarding the plane.

This a great benefit in our opinion, to board the plane before the main bulk of passengers flying in Economy. We boarded our plane with the smaller amount of passengers within our cabin only.

This gives you enough time to store your hand baggage away and be seated before the main bulk of passengers enter down the same aisle.

Priority Boarding – Our Experience

We made our way with great excitement to fly for our very first time in World Traveller Plus to the selected boarding gate. When we arrived at our boarding gate we found ourselves in an area consisting of lots of seats and even more passengers waiting around to board.

We quickly found some spare seats and eagerly awaiting our boarding access. Club World passengers were called up first, this took about 10 x minutes in total for all the business class passengers to board first.

Then Premium Economy passengers were instructed to start boarding, this benefit does make it feel special being able to board before economy passengers.

It was a fairly organised boarding experience, with all Business class passengers already seated before we entered the plane. This boarding experience did start our journey off on a good setting and made us feel more relaxed and not feel hurried.

So far, not that much difference in our opinion than flying in World Traveller except for priority boarding before Economy passengers.

BA Business Class Club World 777

Entering the Boeing 777 you turn right from the Galley but I did manage to a quick peek at the Club World business class cabin located to the left at the front of the aircraft. Club World or Business Class looked completely different to Premium Economy, firstly each seat is designed to have its own space.

The BA Club World Seats located next to the Window & aisle seats have separation panels for Privacy. The Seats are larger and are almost like pods with fully flat beds. They are also in a Configuration of 2 / 2 / 2, in World Traveller Plus the configuration is 2 / 4 / 2 seating. This gives you an idea of the extra personal space you get in the Club World Cabin.

For our next trip, we managed to experience Club World using only Avios points & taxes.

British Airways Club World seats

Entering the Premium Economy cabin and after seeing Business class, we felt a little disappointed to be honest.

In our opinion, the Premium Economy cabin looks exactly the same as Economy except there are only two seats on the outside of the aisles next to the windows instead of three seats in Economy.

One added bonus in this cabin was the mood lighting, this was turned on once the main cabin lights were turned off during our night-time flight. It gave the whole cabin a relaxed feeling and quite contemporary.

Reading the latest BA news, it appears that the Premium Economy Cabin & Service have received an over-haul with lots of money invested by BA to improve the customer experience. This includes a thorough deep clean on all aircraft, upgraded cabin interiors, improved seating and a better food and drink catering experience.

British airways Premium Economy seats

BA Premium Economy Seating Layout

Before our Pre-flight departure, we were automatically assigned seats at the front of the cabin facing the Galley wall. This made it feel like we had extra leg room but not 100% sure if we actually did.

On British Airways you have to pay for your preferred Seat Selection. The only class of cabin which gets automatic seat selection at the booking stage is First Class. Purchasing seat selection on Premium Economy varies from £16 – £30 each, and that’s each way.

Not being able to select your seat at the time of booking in our opinion is a poor standard. This basically means that potentially if you book flights together, you could be seated away from each other. In theory, i have been advised this usually does not happen but not 100% guaranteed.

What we did not know at the time of booking our upgrades via our Travel agent was that if we had opened a British Airways Executive account, we could have logged in 24 x hours before our flight and selected our preferred seats.

BA offer all blue status account holders the option before you fly to pre-select your preferred seats but only 24 x hours before departure for Free.

You can however pay to pre-select your preferred seats at the time of booking by paying a fee.

The Seats – Premium Economy

British airways Premium Economy seats seating b777-200
British airways Premium Economy seats 777-200

The Seats are slightly wider than in Economy and you do get a bit more leg room with movable foot rests.

The WT+ seat is officially 18.5 inch wide with a larger seat pitch. Economy seats are 17.5 inches wide and so not a great deal of difference. The seats are Reclinable and do offer better comfort than Economy when trying to sleep.

You do get a Blanket & Cushion, Noise cancelling headphones, In-flight entertainment system & a very basic Amenity bag containing an eye mask, toothbrush, toothpaste, Flight socks and earplugs which looked remotely similar to those in Economy also.

The Cabin is smaller and feels slightly more intimate than Economy. BA Seats in this cabin have a modern Navy Blue & lighter Blue shades with Silver metal trims with adjustable headrests and moveable armrests.

The Seats we found were actually quite comfortable and helped us catch atleast a few hours sleep before arriving at our destination.

Food & Drink Dining Options

British airways premium economy dining

You do get as standard two meals and complimentary drinks on board.

We opted for the Chicken dish which came in the standard tin foil trays with a complimentary bread roll & butter. To be honest, it looked and tasted exactly the same as a similar Chicken dish we had eaten in Economy before.

A small chocolate dessert which was nice and a drink were offered with both meals served. The meal orders were taken quickly and the cabin crew served our selected meals shortly afterwards. We were offered Tea or Coffee twice during our flight time, Tea for me never tastes the same on a plane so I opted for white coffee instead.

No Nespresso or Latte’s served here but we were served perfectly drinkable filter coffee.

However, we did take up the offer of the complimentary sparkling wine, spirits and soft drinks offered throughout our flight duration. The sparkling wine was nice and came served up in British Airways branded glassware.

Cabin Crew Service

Ba cabin crew 777

By the time we were in the air, we did notice a lot of initial activity by the Cabin crew on board in our cabin.

Complimentary Drinks were served up quickly, then a long interval came when we did not see any Cabin crew except for one Stewardess making her way quickly down the aisle through to Club World. It looked like the staff on board were a little stretched.

Overall, the Cabin crew serving us were pleasant and professional.

In Flight Entertainment (IFE)

British airways offer all seats with the In-Flight Entertainment system by means of a touch screen or controlled entertainment console.

The IFE Flat screens are located in the rear of the seat in front of you or in our case, a swivel style movable screen attached to the side of our seat as we were at the front of the cabin.

The In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) contains lots of the latest films, documentaries, television, music, audio books and games to keep you occupied during your flight. We opted to watch a latest Cinema Blockbuster film and after we were kept occupied watching a series of comedy episodes and music documentaries.

The Noise Cancelling headphones worked well at blocking out the background aircraft noise and were very comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

Baggage allowance

BA World Traveller plus baggage allowance

All BA Premium Economy passengers receive as part of the upgraded fare an improved baggage allowance.

This includes for each passenger in world traveller plus the option to take on board with you two bags, one full-sized cabin bag and one additional bag such as a laptop holder etc.

The full-sized cabin bag cannot exceed 56cm in height by 45cm in width and not exceed 25cm in-depth. This larger of the two hand baggage items must be stored away in the overhead lockers.

Hand Baggage allowance

The smaller hand baggage item must not exceed 30cm in height by 40cm in width and not exceed 25cm in-depth. This hand baggage item must be stored under the seat in front of you.

BA hand baggage allowance

Checked Baggage allowance

All adults are allowed up to two checked luggage items each in this Cabin class. The allowance per bag is 23kg each bag, per person. This same allowance also applies to children aged between 2 -12 years old. This is one additional checked baggage per person more than you are allocated when flying in Economy Class.

Verdict / Recommendations

Is it worth the extra cost from Economy?

In our personal opinion, its a tough decision to make and depends on a few different factors.

If your cost conscious then probably No!

If you want a few extra benefits / comforts such as being able to recline a slightly wider, comfier seat so you can catch some sleep if your on an overnight flight then we would say Yes.

The cabin interiors are better, you get extra complimentary drinks and an extra meal and snacks and priority boarding.

To pay approximately £250 each and each way for a few extras like a slightly bigger reclining seat, slightly more leg room and priority boarding maybe worth the additional fees charged.

Reading the latest news from BA, it appears that they have plans to improve the Premium Economy experience with improved dining options, improved cabin interiors, bigger touch screen IFE and a bigger recline on the seats. These improvements are only being fitted to some aircraft first, then a further roll out of improvements across most of the fleet at a later date.

Even with the new improvements, we still sometimes struggle to think that the new World Traveller Plus experience will be worth the additional fees charged at present.

You can however find these upgraded seats in one of the regular BA World Sales at a greater saving, if you find these on your chosen route then we would recommend this Cabin at the reduced sale prices.

We would only fly in BA Premium Economy again if there were no availability in Club World and we would definitely pay for Lounge access this time to make the whole experience as best it could possibly get.

We would however strongly recommend purchasing Premium Economy seats in one of the regular BA Sale’s with the option to upgrade your seats to Club World using avios points.

You can also fly on British Airways in Premium Economy / Club World or even First Class using a 2-4-1 Companion Voucher where you get One Passenger free when using avios points.

How to collect AAdvantage Miles to Book Partner Airline Flights 2019

How to collect AAdvantage Miles to Book Partner Airline Flights 2019

If your planning to use American airlines AAdvantage miles to book flights on various Oneworld alliance partners such as Qatar / Etihad, then this article will highlight for you the Tips needed to collect enough miles to book Business / First Class Flights using only miles and minimal taxes. We look at all the current ways available to collect large amounts of AA miles in the U.K.

Qatar Q Suite Business Class
Qatar Q-Suite Business Class

How to collect AAdvantage Miles in the U.K.

For most based in the U.K, there are a few limited routes to collect AA miles in comparison to residents in the U.S.

However, with a few Tips here you can collect enough miles to redeem on various American airline partners in the OneWorld alliance. These partners include Qatar, British airways & Qantas & Etihad amongst many others.

So how do you collect enough AAdvantage miles to redeem on Partner airlines in Business or even First Class?

The quickest & easiest route we found to collect large amounts of points which can be transferred to AAdvantage are through the American Express SPG Starwood credit card.

Spg amex referral bonus

As an introductory bonus, the Amex SPG card in the U.K offers all new applicants a very generous 30,000 points bonus when you spend £1,000 in the first three months of Cardmembership. 30,000 SPG points can be transferred to American airlines AAdvantage loyalty scheme at a rate of 1:1.

SPG (Starwood) have now merged with Marriott but the SPG Amex card still exists in the U.K for time being but could be withdrawn at any time.

We can go one better and provide you an increased rate of SPG points when you take out the American Express credit card by CONTACTING US using the link in our Menu first & we will send you by email all the details required. This increased bonus rate offers all new applicants 10% extra bonus points – 33,000 SPG points instead.

You could also take out the American Express Gold Credit Card, Our Review found by clicking here – American Express Gold Credit Card. If you’re a new applicant to the Gold Card you will receive 22,000 MR Points transferable to Marriott Bonvoy which can be transferred onto AAdvantage by “Contacting Us” also.

You only need 42,500 SPG points converted to AAdvantage to enable you to fly with a partner one way in Business Class to locations such as the Maldives. That would only leave you to collect another 9500 SPG points to bag those Qatar / Etihad Business Class flights to an exotic location by simply taking out a credit card & spending £1000 in three months.

Once your referred by us to the SPG American express card, you can take out another SPG Amex card for your partner doubling your SPG points to 66,000 points. That is enough points to fly Business Class one way & have enough points left over by nearly 50% needed for the return flights.

Crediting OneWorld Flight Miles to AAdvantage

oneworld alliance partner airlines

When you fly on most airlines, you will earn loyalty points / miles which can usually be transferred to or used against another airline within the same alliance.

If you fly on any airline within the OneWorld alliance, you can credit your miles earnt by flying on a cash paid ticket to American Airlines.

Other airlines within the OneWorld alliance include British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LATAM, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines & SriLankan Airlines.

Most of the Oneworld alliance airlines make it easy to credit your miles during the booking process to another partner airline. All you need to do is look for the partner section within your booking account & enter your chosen alliance members account number and you will earn the miles credited to your chosen alliance partner.

Unfortunately, on some rare occasions the miles may not automatically credit to your chosen alliance member so its best practice to double-check your reservation a few days after you have completed your flight. This will ensure your miles have credited to the correct alliance partner.

On some occasions,  if you do not see your miles credit to the other alliance member all you will need to do is contact your airlines Customer Service department who should be able to resolve any issues.

Transferring Hotel Points to AAdvantage

American airlines allow various Hotel Points to be credited to your AAdvantage account. If you do not have any plans for your hotel points then crediting these to your AAdvantage account can help build your miles balance faster towards those Business / First class flights.

You will need to have signed up to a  British airways executive club before you can join and access the BA Avios eStore site.

The British airways e-Store provides customers a way to Shop online and collect Avios points instead of cash back for every £1.00 you spend on a wide selection of brands at over 800 retailers.

Earning avios points via the BA Avios e-Store, especially when retailers offer generous bonus avios point offers can be very lucrative for your avios balance.

If you consider the fact that British airways sell avios points on their website to account holders at a rate of 1000 x avios points for £31.00 currently, you can now see the benefit in making purchases via the BA e-Store for everyday items you probably would have bought elsewhere earning nothing in return.

What is 1200 x Avios Points Worth?

Avios offerThe whole “what is an avios point worth” discussion topic in the Airline / Hotel loyalty point arena is very subjective. One person may value 1 x avios point higher than another person depending on what they are using their avios points.

As a general rule, most people place a value of 1p per 1 x avios point. If you use the average value most people place on one point, the bonus offer points would be worth £12.00 making the McAfee anti-virus plus package costing you only £12.95.

Remember that the only regular way to purchase avios points is through British airways in your executive account at a cost of £31.00 per 1000 x avios points, you can now see the value in these bonus point offers when you do the calculations.

One advantage using points over cash for purchasing flights can be in Peak seasons like School holidays. Typically, like all flights and resorts on School holiday times the prices are usually hiked up.

However, if you use Avios Points against a “Peak Time” flight you will require only a small amount more points against a massive cash hike for a paid ticket. You may also find availability using avios against a sold out fare route.

Opinion / Recommendations

As explained above, avios points certainly do have their benefits against cash paid tickets in certain circumstances.

The tricky part can be finding enough bonus point deals to redeem against a Business or First Class flight.

To pay £24.95 for a market leading anti-virus protection on a 50% off promotion and receive a stack load of free points, what’s to complain about?

When a decent bonus offer comes along we would recommend to jump on them as soon as possible as some offers are pulled before the original expiry date if popular.

Please remember to always check prices elsewhere of any products or services you may see on bonus offers first as you may find them cheaper elsewhere reducing their value. It has been known for the price of items whilst on bonus offers to be hiked up in general.

Sign up to our Newsletter to be sent the latest avios offers before anyone else.

Simply sign up for the minimum requirements which would be a weekly subscription box, the cheapest deal we found was based on a Gousto Recipe Food Box for two people, for a week’s worth of recipes priced at £24.99.

Remember also that this price will get you a week’s worth of meals including recipe cards and most of the ingredients required to complete each recipe in full, delivered for Free to your door.

When we analysed the Gousto box towards their competitors, Gousto came out as great value especially as you receive 800 avios points in with the deal.

All you have to keep in mind is to cancel after you receive your first weekly meal recipe box or otherwise you will be billed for the next week unless of course you decide to carry on with the subscription plan. Cancellation is easy to do, you just look for the cancellation button within your account. You are not tied into any contract and you can cancel at anytime.

This avios bonus point offer expires 31/12/2019 but could be pulled at anytime so if your interested it’s probably best to go ahead and sign up atleast for a week’s subscription package.

Usually such bonus point deals are only for First Time users of the subscription package. However, the terms do state that existing customers will receive bonus points but at a reduced rate. Unfortunately, we do not have any idea how much this reduced rate would be but even if it was 50%, your still getting 400 x avios points for something you were going to purchase anyway.

What does 800 x avios points get me?

800 x Avios Points on its own does not get you very far, that’s being honest.

However, if you keep collecting points via different offers highlighted here you could soon have enough points to fly Economy Class on British airways somewhere in europe quite easily as this only requires 15k avios points return.

Collecting enough points to fly in Business or First Class cabins Long haul require a lot of points. However, a smaller amount of points would get you in BA Club Europe Business Class or enable you to upgrade from Premium Economy to Club World Business Class. Read our article on how to use a small amount of avios points to upgrade from Premium Economy to Club World by clicking here > Upgrade BA Premium Economy to Club World

If you have tried the Gousto Recipe Food Box in the past and are not interested in this deal, a similar offer is also on at present by taking out a subscription weekly food box from Hello Fresh. We wrote a review found here > 1000 x Avios Points – Hello Fresh Food Box

Our Verdict / Recommendations

This is one of the very few generous bonus points offers available from the British airways Avios eStore at present.

When you consider that your paying exactly the same price as you would if you went direct to Gousto for any of their Food Recipe Boxes, 800 x avios points is worth in comparison to buying points direct from BA worth approximately £24.00. Its like someone giving you £24.00 worth of points for nothing.

If you stack this offer with the Hello Fresh offer and purchased Norton Virus Protection via the BA eStore currently with 50% off, you would already have collected over 3000 x avios points just by taking out three different bonus point offers at present.

Our recommendations would be to jump in now as offers like this usually reduce in points after a certain amount of customers sign up through the link or they close the offer early.

Buying Hilton honor Points

Hilton Honors use a company called to sell points on the their behalf. is a company who specialise in selling points on behalf of major organisations worldwide and are a trusted provider of e-commerce solutions in the world.

To purchase the bonus Hilton points, click this link provided here:

You will be taken directly to the Hilton’s bonus point page.

Select the amount of points you require, remember the best value applies on any purchases above 5000 Hilton honor points.

Is this a Bonus Point deal any good?

Hilton Honors offer only a few times a year a similar deal like today’s offer, but with all generous offers you may see this being the last time as previous buy points deals have offered lower amounts.

You will, in most cases make a major saving especially on the higher end Hilton properties such as the Conrad Maldives or the new Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives both within the Hilton portfolio.

The best examples are when included with the below:

  • A few very expensive high Category hotels, like the Conrad Maldives
  • ‘5th night free’ redemptions for Silver, Gold and Diamond member

Keep in mind that Hilton redemptions using Points are flexible and there are No additional taxes to pay unlike Cash purchased rooms.

As an example, the new Hilton Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi King Beach Villa with Pool would cost you in Taxes per night if using cash an eye watering 23.2% on top of your room cash price. That is approximately £352 just in Taxes levied per night.

The Bonus Points Ratio

Hilton bonus

The best bonus point “Sweet Point” for me is the maximum amount of points you can purchase in one go.

So $800 gets you 160,000 Hilton points, in comparison one night at the new Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives costs on average $2117 per night.

You only need 120,000 Hilton points per night to stay at the new Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives so in theory you could purchase enough points for $800 for one night at the Waldorf Astoria saving you over $1200 a night. You would also receive a third more points left towards another night in the Maldives.

honor points bonus promotion

The trick here would be to purchase another 80,000 Hilton points using your partners Hilton Honors account to purchase another 80,000 points = 160,000 points each.

The result would be 320,000 Hilton points for $1600 which would get you enough points to stay at the Waldorf Astoria for two nights and leave you 80,000 points left over or two and three quarter nights in total.

The total value for 2.63 nights at the Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives would be approximately $4934 for a $1600 outlay via buy points today, a steal…

Hampton by Hilton Gatwick North 2019 Review

Hampton Hilton Gatwick North 2019 Review

Hampton by Hilton Gatwick North Hotel Review – Our article today covers in-depth the Hampton Hilton hotel located inside the Gatwick North Terminal. We look at the rooms, restaurant, breakfast, dinner, bar, reception, prices, bathrooms, location and comfort, business centre & fitness centre.

How to find the Hampton Hilton – Gatwick North Terminal

For location, this hotel is an absolute winner if you flying in or out of Gatwick airport. The Hampton by Hilton Is one of the only two hotels actually located within the terminals at Gatwick airport. The hotel is just 2 x minutes walk to the North Terminal’s departure gates and only 5 x minutes away from the South Terminal via the free Monorail around the clock passenger service.

To find the hotel you need to enter through the main entrance at the Gatwick North Terminal. Then proceed towards either the escalators or use the lifts provided to the first floor concourse.

From exiting the lift on the 1st floor, turn right into the concourse where you see the baggage & ticket machines for airlines such as easyjet. From the top of the escalators you will need to travel forwards, then turn right past a WH Smith outlet.

Turn right and you will see in the near distance at the end of the concourse the Hampton by Hilton hotel entrance. You then follow a covered walkway through to Reception.

Reception / Foyer

We entered the Reception / Foyer area through the sliding entrance doors and were surprised by the modern interiors, the choice of lighting and the colourful furniture with wooden flooring.

Gatwick North Hilton chill out area

In comparison to the Hilton at the Gatwick South Terminal the Reception area is a lot smaller with two reception staff on duty at most times.

The general reception area gives a relaxed atmosphere providing plenty of “chill out” areas to sit down & relax.

Just before reception we noticed another area with plenty of leather tub chairs & sofas. We noticed customers using this area to get ready after checking out rather than clogging up the main thoroughfare with their luggage.

The reception staff were professional and pleasant and processed our keys quickly. They explained all the hotels amenities including the restaurant, breakfast area, bar and elevators.

We entered the elevator to take us to the fifth floor where our allocated room was on this occasion. We selected our floor but nothing happened, the doors just stayed open? After a minute or two I frantically started pushing our floor number again, still nothing.. For security reasons we discovered that you have to swipe your key fob first to activate the lift.

This hotel is like the inside of the Tardis, it doesn’t feel large when you enter reception but it has many floors and a total of 192 rooms. We travelled through a few corridors until we located our room number. All corridors are carpeted to reduce noise disturbance and in general it gave us the impression of a very well maintained, clean & tidy hotel so far.

As we entered our Queen room we noticed how modern & clean the room felt towards our last stay at the Hilton Gatwick South, review found by clicking here Hilton Gatwick South.

Our room contained a large, Queen sized bed with crisp linen and very plump, soft feather filled pillows. Extra linen and blankets were also available stored away in the wardrobe.

A wall table which housed a flat screen TV, small kettle, a selection of Tea bags / Coffee sachets, sugars, milk cartons etc. Two cups & saucers were also provided and glassware but no under counter refrigerator or water. We do feel that all hotels should leave guests atleast a bottle of water in each & every room.

Two Side bed tables housing swivel style adjustable lighting and a telephone / clock radio.

All rooms at the Hampton by Hilton Gatwick have air conditioning, we found this facility to be quiet towards other hotels we have stayed at in the past.

Free Wi-Fi in all rooms comes in very handy when either catching up after a long flight or pre-departure. Reception provides you when you sign in the Wi-Fi password. We found the Wi-Fi signal strong & reliable in our room, we would imagine this would be welcomed if you were using the desk area for business reasons.

The room contains a small but adequate wardrobe, this area was large enough to hang up about 8 x items and store your luggage away. We also discovered an iron & ironing board and a safe within the room.

A desk area and a comfy leather tub chair would come in very handy if conducting some business before or after a flight.

Even though the hotel is located within the North Terminal, we did not notice any aircraft noise or any disturbance from other hotel guests during our stay.

Just off the main room adjacent to the wardrobe area contained a large, spacious & modern bathroom. This contained a walk-in power shower, large wash hand basin, toilet and additional towels & toiletries. The bathroom looked to us as been recently refurbished with all facilities impeccable clean, we were very impressed.

The bathroom was well supplied with free toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner & shower gel all contained with a pump dispenser located within the shower cubicle. The wash handbasin also held hand wash & hand cream dispensers. The towels were all fluffy and looked new with extra stored away in a cabinet within the bathroom.

Bar / Restaurant area

The bar area looked very clean, modern with white & grey tops and downlighting. In general the bar area was well stocked with beer on tap, spirits, wines & soft drinks with reasonable prices for a hotel located at a London airport.

The staff were friendly & efficient offering service as soon as I approached the bar area. If you fancy a glass or bottle of wine or a cocktail to start off your onward journey, the bar menu was fairly extensive with plenty of choice. We did not notice any premium wines in the bar menu but this is to be expected unless your staying at a 5 Star Hotel on site.

The bar area contained lots of seating for customers including either smaller, intimate areas with two chairs & table settings to larger tables seating up to six people. The bar area floods with natural light from the floor to ceiling Windows and down lighting. We noticed a few couples eating within the bar area and a family.

Large flat screen LCD TV’s displayed a major sporting event during our visit and regional news. The entire area felt relaxed and not crowded. We decided to use this area to eat dinner also as we found the separate area cold with no atmosphere. The bar menu is available 24 x hours a day offering a selection of cooked foods to order.

Business Centre

Hampton Hilton Gatwick North Business areaThe Business Centre can be found from a doorway off the bar area located in the corner of the building.

This area was mostly separated from the main bar / restaurant by high walls to provide a quiet area to conduct business.

Facilities include Audio/Visual Equipment Rental, Complimentary Printing Service, Fax machine, Meeting Rooms, Photo Copying Service including the use of a Printer.

Breakfast Serving & Facilities

Hot breakfast is served everyday from 6am through to 10am. Out of these hours a cold breakfast serving is available everyday in the same area consisting of cereals, fruit, yogurt, breads, jams with coffee and tea.

Due to this hotel’s convenient location to both Gatwick terminals, the breakfast serving even before 6am became quite busy, fairly quickly with lots of people awaiting the hot breakfast to be set out.

The breakfast area was well stocked during our visit. Due to an early morning flight we were there just before 6am before the hot items were brought out from the kitchen. You can either choose from a wide selection of muesli, granola, cereals, porridge oats, fresh fruit or fruit salad & yogurt.

A good selection of jams, butter, margarine and spreads were also available for toast. On a separate table was a smaller selection of cold meats and cheese.

Along the walls of the breakfast area contained facilities such as a catering size toaster, hot water, tea bags and coffee sachets. Also two, large instant coffee machines serving at the push of a button Cappuccino, Latte, Flat white & Black coffee. Other drinks on display included fruit juices such as Orange, Apple & Breakfast juice.

The hot breakfast servings included bacon, sausages, eggs either fried or scrambled options, tomatoes, mushrooms etc.

I found the hot breakfast serving to be ok, the bacon & eggs being well cooked by the kitchen team. However, I did notice that the Sausages to be of a lower standard than expected. Overall the cooked breakfast was Satisfactory / Good standard.

The breakfast seating area runs the length of the side perimeter of the building with views from the floor to ceiling glass panels of the terminal traffic below.

Check out & Room Billing

After breakfast we vacated our room fairly quickly as we had only a few hours to spare in the British Airways Lounge before our flight departure, review found here BA Lounge Gatwick.

Reception were extremely fast at checking us out and processing any billing to our room from the dinner and drinks from the night before. When you check-in at reception you are required to provide a payment card for any billing. This enables all bar & restaurant bills to be added to your rooms account enabling a faster check out process.

Room Pricing

We paid for our Queen room by using 15k avios points. A queen room at this hotel averages out at approximately £90.00 a night using one of the many online hotel comparison sites. Going direct to Hilton for our room averaged approximately £99.00 a night.

However, if you do not use Hilton to book your hotel stays direct you will not be allocated any Hilton Honor points. Hampton by Hilton provide breakfast free of charge to all customers so we factor the additional charges for breakfast into our research when booking hotel stays at Gatwick airport.

The Skint Travellers Verdict / Recommendations

As soon as we entered the Hampton by Hilton Gatwick North hotel reception, we knew the hotel in general would be modern, clean and offer a good range of facilities.

The hotel is so conveniently located that you do not even need to leave the terminal to board your flight which in our opinion adds extra value.

We compared this to its sister hotel, the Hilton at Gatwick South and actually prefer this hotel between the two and its cheaper on average, per night. The room was better than the Hilton in our opinion, but the facilities were better at the Hilton such as the restaurants and breakfast area.

We would recommend to bag the best price for a room here would be to book as soon as possible using an online company offering hotel rooms as these companies generally can offer rooms cheaper than Hilton direct.

Also, once you have found your best online price for your room, try checking out a Cashback company like Topcashback or Quidco before you book just to see if you can earn some cashback from your purchase.

British Airways Club Europe Review 2019

British Airways Club Europe Review 2019

This was our first time flying on British airways Club Europe Business Class in 2019, so we had high expectations for this flight.

During our Review we will cover the BA Business class dedicated check-in zone, fast track security, BA club europe lounges, priority boarding, Catering, menu inc breakfast & lunch, seats, luggage & hand baggage allowance.

Using the Google Flights search facility, we found London to Tenerife at the lowest point on the price graph with availability was coming in at £330 each, a whopping £660 for the two of us. Time to switch to using avios points instead, availability in early March – 68k avios plus £98.00 Taxes, clicked and booked.

British Airways Club Europe flights in the regular BA Sales can be bagged for as little as £200 Return, per person. When you find a Club Europe flight that cheap we strongly recommend booking immediately as these sale fares sell out fast.

Another advantage of paying cash for Club Europe flights are you will be credited avios points for all flights and earn Tier Points from BA which after only two cash flights and earnt 300 x tier points will automatically gain your Bronze membership.

Gatwick to Tenerife flight map
Gatwick to Tenerife South flight map

Gatwick to Tenerife South is the only direct BA flights available in March from London taking approximately 4 hours, 20 mins consisting of 1,572 nautical miles using the Airbus A320 aircraft. Tenerife North is available from both Gatwick & Heathrow also but stops in Barcelona for 1.5 hours and the shortest flight takes approx 6 hours, 30 minutes.

BA Club Europe Dedicated Check-in Zones

BA Gatwick Dedicated Check-in
BA Gatwick Dedicated Check-in

When flying BA Business class in Europe, you receive as part of your flight package the use of the BA dedicated check-in zone.

From the main BA check in area,  we entered via an entrance signed as above. As we walked through we found ourselves in a queue awaiting service. Many Business Class luggage drop off booths were open and staffed but still some long queues.

We were directed to the First Class check-in booth on this occasion. The staff member was very attentive and chatty and attached a yellow First Class luggage label to our suitcases. Normally in Business Class you get an Orange luggage label which means your luggage receives priority within the baggage system.

BA Club Europe Fast Track Security

After our luggage drop off, we headed our way to the fast track security which is also part of your package if you fly BA Club Europe.

To find the fast track security lanes, you enter through the normal security area but then keep to the left through a dedicated fast track lane. There was one conveyor system for checking your hand baggage but the system worked efficiently and after only a few short minutes, we found ourselves already through.

Normally, the security gate system at Gatwick can at times be long and a frustrating wait. Fast track security is definitely a benefit in our opinion and highly recommended.

Once through fast track security, we made our way to the BA Business Galleries Lounge, our full Review found by clicking here BA Gatwick Lounge

British Airways Club Europe Baggage Allowance

Checked in luggage allowance is 2 x 32kg baggage allowance per person. The hand baggage allowance is 1 x laptop bag of 23kg and 1 x cabin bag of 23kg.

Extra baggage in size & weight can be booked in but will incur additional charges.

Please refer to the BA Baggage allowance dedicated page below:

Does BA Club Europe have lounge access?

All British Airways Club Europe flights automatically provide all passengers lounge access to any BA Business Class Lounge throughout Europe. These lounges will be either run by BA or by another airline in the One World Alliance.

Access to all BA Business Class Lounges Will have certain restrictions such as opening & closing times, some lounges will have restrictions on the amount of time can be spent in the lounges also.

BA Club Europe Priority Boarding

Also part of the Club Europe package is Priority boarding of the plane.

By the time we had reached our boarding gate we just caught a Tannoy message requesting that all Business class passengers to board the plane now.

BA a320 priority boarding
BA CE A320 Priority Boarding

It appears that Short haul boarding is a lot quicker process than in Long haul.

Priority boarding is definitely a benefit in our opinion, just to be able to board the plane first gives you enough time to place your hand baggage away and be seated and settled before the bulk of passengers enter the same aisle.

British Airways Club Europe Cabin & Seats

As we entered the plane we were warmly greeted by the Cabin Crew who checked our tickets and directed us to our seat location/s in the front section of the plane.

On first impressions, the Club Europe Cabin looks exactly the same as in Economy.

There are no notable differences to us with the decor inside this Cabin unlike the differences between long haul Business & Economy class.

The real differences became apparent when we arrived at our seats.

The seat layout in Club Europe are the same as in economy consisting of three seats either side of the main aisle. However, the notable difference is that the centre seat is not used for a passenger, but utilised instead as a tray table.

This tray table in the centre seat enables passengers both sides to enjoy more width to stretch out and place cups / glasses or personal items on the table.

For a single traveller, this set up would also provide more privacy.

Club europe seats
BA Business Class Seats A320

We purposely choose seats as close to the front of the plane in the CE cabin as possible and managed to secure row 5, seats D/F.

This was due to us experiencing on our last BA Club World flight an unsatisfactory level of service by being unfortunately seated in the last row. It is common for meals to run out by the time the cabin crew have reached passengers in the last rows on BA.

If you’re not already aware, seat selection is not free even for Club Europe passengers.

To read our New article on whether you should pay or not to reserve BA Seats click here – BA Seat Selection.

The legroom of the seats in Club Europe are 30 inches with a seat width of 17 inches. This according to the official information provided by British airways is the same as an economy class seat.

Club Europe cabins do not supply any in-Flight entertainment of any kind. We were a little surprised to discover this as we were on a flight lasting nearly 4.5 hours.

Do you get food on BA Club Europe?

Yes, all BA Club Europe passengers receive a complimentary three course meal as part of their flight package. Meals will vary depending on the time of day at departure and the flights duration.

Breakfast dining service can include hot, cooked food, cold selections and muesli or pastries. All breakfast servings come with tea or coffee or Champagne / Wines.

Usually all meals will be accompanied by fresh bread rolls & butter / fruit juices. Most flights will also serve Tea or Coffee separate servings with a snack.

British Airways Club Europe Menu

Our outbound flight departed Gatwick at 9.20am to Tenerife so was within the time slot of the Breakfast serving.

I had already indulged in a cooked breakfast that morning at the Hampton by Hilton hotel – Gatwick North review found here – Hampton Hilton Gatwick North so decided against the full English again and opted for a lighter breakfast of continental meats and cheeses.

This dish came with meats, egg, olives & selection of different cheese’s such as Brie & Mozzarella. Also accompanying the main dish was a fresh fruit salad and a shortcake style dessert with the usual Bread roll, butter & jam. We were also handed hot towels to clean and refresh our hands.

BA CE Breakfast

My wife choose the Omelette which came with mushrooms, a cooked tomato and potato style Rosti.

This was also accompanied by the same fruit salad and a cheesecake style dessert. My wife enjoyed the Omelette, I tasted some and was impressed.

Both our breakfasts were served with either fresh coffee or Twinings tea.

BA Club Europe Omelete breakfast

On our return flights from TFS, we were on the afternoon service so had the opportunity to experience the Club Europe lunch menu.

On this occasion, I opted for the Beef Massaman curry and my wife choose the macaroni cheese.

British Airways Club lunch

I found the Massaman Beef curry actually quite good and tasty. It used a creamy style, mild curry sauce with braising style beef chunks and a Khichdi rice with vegetables.

This dish also came with antipasti including stuffed peppers with feta, olives and Sun dried tomatoes. A dish of a selection of cheese which were delicious including Somerset brie and coastal cheddar, black grapes & crackers then for dessert an Orchard fruit crisp.

BA Europe Business Class lunch

My wife enjoyed the macaroni cheese pasta dish. I also sampled some and was impressed for a pasta style dish on a plane, not dry and chewy.

Her meal also came with the antipasti, cheese selection and Orchard fruit crisp dessert, all accompanied by a bread roll and butter.

All meals were served up on Bone China crockery and accompanied by steel BA branded cutlery with Dining menus provided to all passengers in this Cabin.

Club Europe Drinks & Refreshments

Before departure, drinks were offered to all passengers by the Cabin Crew. This included any soft drink, spirits, still wine or Champagne. All drinks are served in BA branded glassware.

I still like to take every opportunity to have a glass or two of Champagne either in the Lounge, pre-departure or during the flight.

During lunch I decided to try the White Chardonnay which I found pleasantly drinkable.

Tea by Twinings and Union roast coffee was regularly offered by the cabin crew to all the Club Europe passengers.

BA Club Europe drinks menu

BA Club Europe In-Flight Cabin Crew Service

BA cabin crew service in our experience is unpredictable.

On one flight you can experience a great cabin crew, then on another flight can be not so good which we feel is a real shame and does not portray we feel the correct customer service level to all BA passengers.

On our outbound flight the cabin crew were just ok, they completed the basics of their job and nothing else.

On our return flight,we experienced a much more customer focused crew with an on-board cabin crew manager present. The cabin crew manager made conversation with every passenger on our flight whilst serving customers with a smile.

We struck up a conversation with the Cabin crew manager during our flight on a few occasions and he shook my hand and wished me an onward pleasant journey when we departed the plane.

BA Club Europe Benefits vs BA Economy Class

Flying on British Airways Club Europe does certainly come with some Perks.

In comparison to Economy class on the same flight we received a better seat in our opinion. This was due to the layout of our seats with the middle seat reserved by a tray table. Just having the tray table located in the middle seat provided us both extra space to relax, spread out a bit rather than almost rub shoulders with a stranger if were seated in Economy class.

The Club Europe Dining options were in our opinion actually quite good including a 3 Course Meal & Drinks inc Champagne.

In Economy you have to buy your food which includes sandwiches, snacks & drinks and that is if your lucky and your sandwich or snack has not run out.

Club Europe providing Business Lounge access at Gatwick on British Airways Airways is definitely a big bonus.

You gain complimentary access to the prestigious BA Galleries South Lounge, economy class receives no lounge access unless you pay £25.00 each and with paying you do not get access to BA Gatwick South lounge, but a lounge nearby and not as good in our opinion.

Club Europe passengers receive priority boarding, economy class passengers have to wait until Business class passengers have boarded and settled.

Flying BA Club Europe can cost as little as £200 per person, Return.

This Business class flight will also come with extra Tier Points & additional BA Avios Points.

After only 2 Club Europe flights at 80 TP’s each way on the longer european routes, you will receive automatic British airways executive club Bronze membership which provides free seat selection 7 days before departure and an increased avios point earning level.

When you take into consideration all the extras associated with BA Business Class,Club Europe including free BA Lounge access &  Priority Boarding, dedicated check-in, additional luggage allowances at 2 x 32kg each, 3 Course Meals, Free drinks and more room in your seat allocation you can start to see why it is worth paying extra.

In our opinion there are not a lot of difference in the prices between Economy & Business Class.

Our Verdict / Recommendations on Club Europe

British airways Club Europe is “as good as it gets” for BA short-haul European flights unless your lucky enough to be flying on one of the very few, long haul aircraft used on some European routes in which case you would be lucky enough to be sitting instead in a Club World cabin.

The cabin & seats are the same as in Economy except for the middle seat being reserved & used for a tray table. The real difference is the meal & drinks selection served and being seated in the front cabin of the plane, fast track security, priority boarding & the extra baggage allowances and don’t forget access to the Premium Business Class Lounges throughout Europe.

Is it worth paying extra?

This all depends on how much you place a value on those extra benefits you receive in Business Class towards Economy.

We will always go out of our way to fly Club Europe now if flying short-haul but would always research the cheapest way possible. Remember we only paid 68k avios points plus £98.00 in taxes towards a cash fare price of £660, this makes 68k avios valued at £562 in our eyes.

If you would like to learn how to earn almost 50% of the avios points required to fly direct to Tenerife just by signing up for a UK credit card, please click the link provided here Amex Preferred Rewards Gold Card

Our other recommendations would be to keep an eye on the regular BA Flight sales for discounted business class flights as some bargains can be found.

Another option would be to always try a “Dummy Run” booking using BA Holidays. The dedicated holiday package site regularly displays packages potentially making the Club Europe flights cheaper than purchasing your basic flight & hotel separately.

We strongly recommend to Definitely reserve your seats as close to front of the cabin as possible as this almost guarantees that you will receive your preferred meal choice.

To locate the Hotel you simply exit the Gatwick South Terminal and follow the signage stating “Hotels”. You follow the Pedestrian walkway across the road to the Covered walkway next to the Car Park. Turn right and follow the Covered walkway for a few minutes and turn left at the signage “Hilton Hotel”.

You will now enter a Walkway Tunnel and after a few mins walk you access the Hilton Gatwick South grand entrance.

Hilton London Gatwick Parking

The Hilton London Gatwick South Hotel does not have its own, private customers Car Park. However, just a few minutes walk from the Hotel foyer you can park your vehicle in the Gatwick South Terminals car park. You can locate the Car Park by foot from the Gatwick South arrivals terminal by exiting the terminal, crossing the main road and you will see the Multi levelled Car parking zones in front of you. Take the Stairwells or the Elevator to gain access to each floor & zone. The Hilton Gatwick South Hotel also offers Park & Fly options / Valet Parking during the booking process.

To locate the South Terminal Car Park by Car, Exit the M23 at Junction 9, follow the signs for Gatwick Airport. When you arrive at the first roundabout you need to turn left following signs towards the South Terminal.

Reception / Foyer

Hilton Gatwick South reception area
Reception area staffed 24 x hours a day

As you enter the Hilton london gatwick airport entrance you find to your left a Costa Coffee area, perfect for grabbing a quick coffee & snack. Continue forwards and we were surprised to enter a very large foyer area with the Reception desks to the left and a bar / seating area in the middle where you can relax and grab a drink or something to eat. This entire area is covered over by a transparent roof Canopy making it feel very light & spacious. The area had an instant feeling of vibrancy and a good, first impression.

The Reception area was staffed by three receptionists when we arrived and we found a staff member available immediately. The Hilton staff were professional and we could not fault their friendliness. I was advised that I had been allocated an upgrade to an Executive room on the third floor due to me being a Hilton Honors Diamond member.

The Reception area is open 24 x hours a day and are very efficient. We had to make a request for an early morning wake up call, our call was answered extremely quickly.

Restaurants / Bars

You can catch Lunch at Amy’s Bar from 12.30 on weekdays and is situated next to reception in the foyet area. Amy’s bar opens in the week at 10.00am everyday & 11.00am on the weekends. This bar serves a selection of light lunches / sharing platters & snacks. Amy’s bar also serves most alcoholic drinks including cocktails or Tea / Coffee & closes at 1.00am.

If you prefer a quick coffee or snack then Costa is open everyday from 6.00am to 6.00pm. Service is quick & efficient and good value.

Dine in the evening at Amy’s Restaurant from 6pm – 10.45pm everyday of the week including weekends. This restaurant serves a finer dining menu and a perfect setting for a Romantic dinner before or after your journey.

Amy’s Restaurant

If you prefer a more relaxed, chilled out atmosphere then Charlie Fry’s sports Bar is the place to visit. The bar hosts big sporting events on the large screen TV’s and serves faster food like Burger & fries and beers, spirits etc. Charlies bar is open everyday from 5.00pm – 11.00pm.

Breakfast area

The Garden restaurant is where breakfast is served everyday from 5.30am – 10.30am & 11.00am on the weekends. Being a Hilton Diamond Member we got breakfast for free during our Stay. You enter the Garden restaurant from the ground floor near the elevators. As you enter, you are asked for your room number and escorted to your table of choice. The Garden Restaurant has lots of natural Light flooding through the many Windows on one side and soft down lighting, much appreciated after a Long flight or early start.

Hilton Gatwick South garden restaurant breakfast area

The breakfast sitting had a wide range of hot & cold foods including self-serve areas containing cooked bacon, sausages, eggs etc. A large carousel toaster for fresh toast, ranges of fruit juices, yogurt, pastries, fresh fruits, cereals and muesli. A waiter asks for our order of Tea or Coffee at our table and promptly returned with our order. From our observations the Garden restaurant was well run and all staff polite, courteous and well dressed. The area was kept impeccably clean with a staff member observed sweeping up and cleaning tables and leaving fresh, clean tablecloths, napkins etc.

The only slight niggles we had would be that they didn’t appear to stock all UK national newspapers. I found the newspaper table but could only find an Irish publication?

With such an early breakfast serving starting at 5.30am, this worked well for us catching a 9.00am outbound flight.

Executive Lounge access

Hilton gatwick south executive lounge area

The executive lounge was located on the third floor and was only a short walk from our room. All Hilton honor Diamond members get complimentary access to all Hilton Hotel executive lounges. All guests staying in either Executive rooms or Suites also get complimentary access to all lounges.

Facilities in the Hilton Gatwick executive lounge included free Wi-Fi, private check-in desk staffed at all times, PC usage in a small business area, free newspapers and magazines, Televisions.

Complimentary continental breakfasts are available in the executive lounge areas, free drinks, tea or Coffee.

Complimentary canapés and drinks served daily between 6:30pm and 8:30pm.

We were not aware of any Room service offered or made aware of this service on arrival.

The Hotel is extremely large and we did on occasion find it difficult to locate our room. You take an elevator to your floor but with 821 rooms in total, the numbering and directions to locate your room can be a little overwhelming especially after a long flight.

Hilton Hotel gatwick south executive room

All walkway corridors are carpeted, this works well to reduce noise from luggage being dragged along outside your room & reduces disturbance. We seemed to walk down a number of long, various corridors until we located our room. We also noted whilst crossing a glass covered walkway what appeared to be a newer looking section of the hotel. On further research it appears the more up to date rooms are located in this section.

When we entered our Executive room, we instantly noticed the high temperature of the room. The heating / cooling system had been set to 23c which we found very uncomfortable. We reduced the temperature down but the cooling system appeared to do little to reduce the temp quick enough. We woke in the middle of night on a few occasions feeling hot & uncomfortable.

The room appeared adequate but a little dated. Located In the corner of our room was a large built-in desk area. A generous sized bathroom with Separate shower cubicle, wash hand basin and toilet. Toiletries were supplied like shower gels, shampoo / conditioners and toothpaste.

The king size bed was more than adequate with feather filled pillows, thick feather filled duvet and cotton bed sheets. An extra blanket was left at the end of the bed, as if we needed that…

A large flat screen TV, small kettle and a choice of free Tea’s & Coffee. Two small bottles of water were all supplied in our room. A large wardrobe with hangers to accommodate two people.

On reflection we think the room was outdated in decor and furniture. The desk was far too large for the room and the bathroom could benefit a refit to modernise. We expected more from Hilton and we think maybe they have not invested in updating all the rooms in the Hilton Gatwick South Hotel due to its captive audience being so conveniently located to the airport.

The Hilton london gatwick airport south accepts all major credit cards. When you arrive at reception you will be asked to provide a payment card to be swiped in case of any additional payments required on your bill like food, drinks or other payable services that the hotel offers.

Verdict / Opinions

For convenience to the Gatwick South Terminal, this hotel is an outright winner. There are not many airport hotels that you can exit a terminal and in less than five minutes be signing in at reception.

We paid for our room using only Hilton honor points at 17k a night. Cash rates for a basic room can be as low as £79.00 per night.

The Facilities on site were great with a wide choice of places to eat and drink. The look and appearance as you enter the foyer of the Hotel is impressive and the breakfast we found a pleasant experience.

All the staff at the Hilton Gatwick South we encountered were professional, courteous and well presented at all times.

The only Negative we would say was our room. Especially as we were upgraded to an executive room, we expected a more modern room with an updated bathroom, decor and furniture in our opinion. It made us wonder what a basic room would have been like at the hotel?

Where to use your Gold Credit Card in the UK

American Express Gold Rewards Card payment

Amex has not been the preferred choice of consumers in the past due to the reduced number of retailers who accept American Express cards as payment. This has changed in recent years, all big retailers like all Supermarkets, restaurant chains, online outlets all now accept American express.

A great Tip to be aware of is if you plan to make a purchase online and do not see the Amex logo displayed as a payment option, look for the PayPal logo instead. PayPal accept American express as a payment option so all you need to is enter your card details in your PayPal account, now you can use your Gold Card as payment online.

Another way to use as payment if a retailer for some reason does not accept Amex, such as a payment option, simply buy gift cards from any major supermarket using your Gold card for that retailer.

There also lots of ways of using your card on payments that you would otherwise usually use cash through your bank account like Direct Debits to Utility companies, Council Tax etc. We will go into more detail in these routes a little later on.

The application process is extremely easy to complete online. You will be required to complete all sections as per the sections above. Once you have submitted your application online, you will either receive an instant decision statement if successfully accepted or a message they will be in contact shortly with a decision. If you do not receive an instant decision, do not think your not accepted, it usually means some additional checks need to be completed using a credit reference agency using your credit file.

In our instance, even though we meet all the requirements of the Gold credit card application, we never get an immediate decision. It usually takes up to 7 x days for a successful application communication. We find that we receive our cards through the post before we receive a communication that we were successful in our application.

BA British Airways Gatwick Lounge 2019 Review

BA British Airways Gatwick Lounge 2019 Review

Our review from our most recent visit to the BA Lounge Gatwick South. Also known as the British airways Gatwick Lounge / Club Europe or BA Galleries Lounge in the South Terminal. We review the opening / closing times, how to find, food and drink, seating, eligibility, opening & closing times, Reception check-in, Mezzanine area, Business area & Bathrooms.

Does Gatwick have a BA lounge?

Gatwick airport does have a BA British Airways lounge based in the South Terminal. All British Airways passengers flying in either First or Business Class gain complimentary access to the BA Gatwick lounge. Also passengers flying on any OneWorld alliance airline in the same classes have access to this lounge.

Is there a BA first class lounge at Gatwick?

There is one BA British Airways First Class lounge based in the South Terminal immediately next door to the BA Business Class Lounge located on the first floor.

Can I use the British Airways lounge?

Passengers not flying on any British Airways cabin class above will not be allowed entry to any lounge run by BA or other OneWorld alliance. Eligibility is also granted to these lounges if a passenger is flying on any OneWorld alliance aircraft in Business Class or hold either British airways Silver / Gold executive club status.

Can you pay to get into British Airways lounge?

The eligibility of entry to any of the British airways lounges consists of passengers required to be flying on British Airways in Business class / First Class either in Long Haul Club World or Short Haul Club Europe. Passengers cannot pay cash to access any BA Lounge.

How to find the BA Lounge Gatwick South

After checking our luggage through the BA dedicated Business / First Class check-in zone, our review found here – BA Club Europe Review.

We made our way to the fast track security area, as usual on a Monday morning the general security zone was busy with long queues. We found the segregated lane for fast track customers on the left hand side. After a few, short minutes found our way through security and making our way to the lounge, well that was nice and easy…

To locate the British airways Gatwick South Lounge, you travel from security by turning left, then make your way through the Duty Free shopping zone to where you find yourselves in the main, ground floor concourse. Turn left and take the escalator to the first floor.

Gatwick south escalator to BA Lounge
Escalators to the First Floor

Once you’re at the top of the escalator, turn immediately left and you will see an entrance next to the JD Sports shop. Large directional signage above the entrance states “Lounges” including British Airways, Clubrooms and the No.1 lounges.

Gatwick south lounge entrance

Travel down the corridor, either take the stairs or elevator up one floor where you enter an area facing towards the British Airways Lounge Reception desk. On route you will also see the entrance doors to the No.1 lounge which can be accessed by purchasing a ticket either online or at the reception desk to access the No.1 lounge.

At the BA Gatwick Lounge Reception desk, to the left First Class passengers can enter the First Class Lounge. To the right, passengers enter the Business Club Galleries lounge.

BA Gatwick South Club Lounge Reception desk

When we approached the reception desk we were greeted by a very friendly BA staff member who checked our tickets and gave us some helpful advise on our flight times and distance to our boarding gate.

We entered the Club Lounge through a set of large, floor to ceiling glass doors to our right hand side.

BA Lounge Gatwick South Opening TImes

The BA Galleries Club Lounge is open everyday of the week, Opening / Closing times are below:

Mon – 05.15 to 20.30  Tue – 05.15 to 19.30  Wed – 05.15 to 19.30

Thurs – 05.15 to 20.30  Fri – 05.15 to 19.30  Sat – 05.00 to 20.30

Sun – 05.00 to 21.00

Eligibility to Access the BA Gatwick South Club Lounge

Can I pay to use the BA lounge at Gatwick?

Unfortunately No. The British airways Lounge at Gatwick is only accessible to passengers flying on a scheduled British Airways flight in either First Class, Business Class long haul Club World or Business Class within Europe otherwise known as Club Europe.

You can also gain access to the lounge if you are a Silver / Gold Member of the British airways executive club or equivalent Status from any of the BA alliance partners on a scheduled flight operated by British Airways or a oneworld  partner.

All passengers must be over the age of 18 years, or if under 18 years must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

The BA Galleries Business Class South Lounge

Even though this is our second time in the last twelve months, every time we enter through those Glass doors we are simply taken back by the sheer size of this lounge. It really does have the “Wow” factor and our eyeline are always drawn to the far distance down the main entrance walkway where you can just make out the Panoramic Windows at the end of the lounge.

As you travel down the walkway to your left you view a section of comfy, leather armchairs separated by an impressive large, glass wall of wine. The colours within this section are contemporary with blacks, reds and greys on neutral backgrounds. The lighting is lower in this area and provides a relaxing feel with only side lamps and some ceiling recessed illumination.

In fact, this new BA Lounge has 469 seats in total and is over 40% bigger than the old BA Business Class Lounge it replaced when it was situated in the Gatwick North Terminal.

Gatwick lounge wall of wine

This first area is a very quiet, relaxing zone with many free newspapers & magazines to read and welcome if you need to catch up on some work, meetings or simply relaxing before in quiet before your flight.

To the right hand side of the walkway, they have recessed sections containing a bench style table and chairs. There are many of these sections so always one available if you fancy some privacy.

As you travel further on, you then enter into the main lounge area containing more tables and chairs.

Gatwick South business lounge chairs

Food & Drink Selection

The drink selection at this lounge is quite extensive with a well stocked self-serve area of various Wines & Spirits. There a few under counter refrigerators holding cans of lager, soft drinks and bottles of water, snacks etc.

Within the food & drinks area, there is also a large island which holds a large amount of bottled still & sparkling water, fresh orange juice, ice and a number of bottles of Champagne.

We enjoyed many a great cup of hand roasted Union coffee with the bean to cup coffee machines and the odd cup of Twining tea.

BA Club Lounge Gatwick South Bar area

The food self-serve area is located at the end of the drinks section. With a selection of hot & cold food depending on the particular time of day, the food area is usually always well stocked from our experience.

Due to our arrival at the lounge in the morning, we observed a selection of pastries such as Croissants, pain au chocolate, pain au raisin etc. Also bread, rolls, cereals, yogurt, fresh fruits. Hot food including egg & bacon mini rolls at breakfast.

Other selections are brought out by staff from the kitchens such as cold meats, salads, dressings etc.

The British Airways Garwick Lounge Facilities & Runway Views

The food & drink area sits in the middle of the BA lounge floor space with a mezzanine area above. The walkways travel in either direction around and through the food & drink zone. Turn left and you enter a perimeter seating area running the entire length of the lounge.

Floor to ceiling glass windows encase the perimeter wall providing some amazing views of the runways. From this angle you can sit in a comfy, leather armchair enjoying a glass of Champagne whilst admiring the view of taxiing planes.

Club Europe lounge gatwick

Upstairs Mezzanine area

Galleries Club mezzanine Upstairs on top of the ground floor food & drinks zone we discovered a mezzanine area. Following one of the two staircases up to this level it was like entering a calm oasis in a busy lounge area.

The facilities upstairs include another refreshments area Including the same bean to cup instant Coffee machines using union roast coffee. Twining tea, fresh fruits, biscuits and hot water dispensers. The area is also well stocked with still and sparking large bottles of water.

The same style comfy leather armchairs, sofas and coffee tables. Scattered throughout was observed many round tables and chairs for two people. Flat screen TV’s displaying live news and flight information keep passengers updated.

We found this area had a calming influence on us, we were not sure if many people knew of this area as we were visiting on a Monday morning whilst the ground floor busy, hardly anybody was seen upstairs.

Upstairs mezzanine area club lounge gatwick

Business Work area

We found a business work area with various facilities to enable anyone to work in quiet. Facilities and equipment supplied included a printer, Computers and worktops.

Families Entertainment Kids Zone

Families can keep their children entertained within an area called the “Kidszone” in the Lounge. This area contains chairs, various children’s entertainment including a table football game and X-boxes with large display screens.

Showers & Toilets

We only took a quick peek inside the shower area during our stay. It all looked clean, modern and functional. The shower area also supplied a hairdryer, hand and body wash, moisturiser, shampoo, shaver sockets and a toilet.

BA Galleries Gatwick bathroom

The toilet areas were large, with cubicles, urinals for men and long mirrors with marble worktops with wash hand basins. The areas looked and felt clean and well stocked including luxury Elemis hand wash and moisturiser hand creams.

Our Personal Verdict / Opinion on the BA Gatwick Lounge

This is one of our personal favourite lounges in the UK. As soon as we enter, we always get the feeling of space with modern decor, great facilities and extremely comfortable armchairs to sit back and relax in.

The entire space has many areas to escape from the main, ground floor busy zones. With quality Spirits, Wines, Champagne and hand roasted coffee on tap, you never have a glass or cup empty here.

Mornings are busy from our experience so be prepared. Late mornings through to the evening are always pleasurable and less crowded. We found a Sunday afternoon to be very quiet.

The food is good but could be slightly better in our opinion as the selections on display are fairly limited. The staff there always very polite and couldn’t do more for you from our experience.

Remember that this lounge is not accessible unless you’re flying BA Business or equivalent on any Oneworld partner and you cannot pay to access this lounge. You can however access the lounge if you’re a British airways executive Silver or above status member or equivalent oneworld partner.

I will never get bored with the Runway views in here, they are great and you almost get a 180 degree view of the runways through the lounge windows.

I can’t think of any better way to await our departure by sitting in a relaxing lounge in a comfy armchair with a glass of Champagne in hand watching planes arrive & take off.

A generous luggage allowance, White Company Amenity kit, White Company Mattress topper, Blanket and Pillow.

Is British Airways Club World Same as Business class on 777?

British Airways Club World is the official airlines terminology for its long haul Business Class cabin. Passengers flying in Club World will receive free seat selection 24 hours before departure, lounge access at both outbound & inbound destinations. Priority boarding before Premium & Economy passengers, lie flat seats, three course dining & free Champagne / wines / spirits throughout the flights.

Club World Dedicated Airport Check-In:

On arrival at London Gatwick airport we made our way to the Dedicated Check-in desks with anticipation of starting our First ever Club World experience. We had already checked in online 24 hours prior to our departure and had managed to select a great pair of seats situated next to the Window / Aisle.

The dedicated British airways Check-in desks were fairly quiet, with only one couple in front of us so we didn’t have to wait long. As we approached the desk we were greeted professional by the Check-in staff with big smiles and friendly chat about our destination. We noticed that our luggage was attached with Bright Orange luggage labels. We believe the labels are part of the Priority package and your luggage is sorted and returned to you faster at your destinations.

BA Club World Business Class 777 Checked Baggage allowance

All Adult Passengers of British airways Club World receive a generous baggage allowance of 2 x 32kg checked in luggage per person.

BA 777 Business Class Hand Baggage allowance

All Club world customers are allowed one piece of hand luggage and one small additional item such as a handbag or laptop on board, both items can weigh up to 23kg each.

Dress Code Requirements in BA Club World:

After researching online and the Conditions on our Tickets, we could not find any stipulations over a Dress Code whilst travelling in CW. We dressed Smart but Casual, we noticed many people in our Cabin dressed for comfort wearing leggings, T-Shirts, Jeans and Trainers.

Does British Airways 777 Business Class have WiFi?

BA Club World Business Class does not offer at present a Wi-Fi service on all its flights. However, it has been stated by 2019 up to 90% of the aircraft fleet will be connected. All Passengers will be notified whilst on board if their flight is enabled for a Wi-Fi service and fees may be applied.

777 Business Class Passenger Priority Boarding:

We spent a considerable amount of time in the BA Galleries Lounge enjoying the Free Champagne, Latte’s and indulging in the food on offer. After three hours, our Boarding Gate displayed our Flight number, it was finally time to make our way to the Boarding Zone area…

We arrived at our Boarding Zone and quickly noticed it was looking very crowded. We managed to locate some seating and waited to see what happened next. After about 15 minutes a message came across the Tannoy asking for all Club World passengers to now make their way to the Boarding desks. This was very different to sitting around for ages when your seated in Economy and was a very good benefit in our opinion.

Boarding the British Airways 777 Business Class Plane:

As we entered the 777 Business Class, we were directed Left by a Stewardess into the Club World Cabin. It was a pleasant experience to enter an empty Cabin and not have to navigate busy aisles with lots of people in the way putting hand luggage into the over head storage lockers. As it’s a small cabin in Club World it didn’t feel crowded or busy and we could easily find our seats and store away our hand baggage quickly. The Cabin gave a good first impression and had a Smart, Classy interior look & feel with Grey / Cream Panel fittings, large round lighting from the ceiling and Mood lighting throughout the Cabin.

What is a Club World Seat on the 777 British Airways?

Our 777 Business Class Lie Flat Seats were located towards the rear of the cabin. I had the pleasure on our Outbound journey of the Window seat which in my opinion is one of the best seats in this cabin.

You enter your personal seat area behind the seat paired with yours next to the Window. The Window Seat faced backwards which was a first for me. It felt a little strange sitting backwards on a Plane but after a few mins I felt accustomed to my surroundings already. The Window seat feels more like a Pod, it’s a very personal space as you are separated from the aisle by the seat paired with yours. The seat felt very large in comparisons to Economy or Premium Economy we had previously flown.

You have a separation, privacy screen between you and your pairing seat. This can be left down to chat or up for complete privacy. However, the Cabin Crew do ask for this to be in the down position when serving food / refreshments.

A fold away footstool is located at the end of your seating area. This acts as the final section when you make your seat into the fully flat-bed for sleeping. Fold away table, a compartment at the bottom for storing items during your flight & power sockets. The CW seat converts into a 183cm or 6ft long fully flat-bed. It comes with fully adjustable headrest and lumbar support. This was by far the most comfortable airline seat I had experienced so far.

For anyone who has never flown BA Club World 777 and not familiar with the layout of the cabin on the 777, the 48 Business Class seats on this plane are arranged in a 2-4-2 layout.

Consisting of 2 pair seats on the outside of either aisle, next to the windows. Then double seats immediately next to each other in the middle with a single Club World Seat attached each side to the middle pair.

The layout for a first time flyer in CW is somewhat unusual due to some seats facing backwards and some forward facing for the aisle seats. For couples travelling together then the middle seats are probably best as your seated immediately next to each other.

Unfortunately, due to the configuration of the seats you will have to climb over passengers legs or feet unless your seated at the rear of the plane. This can be interesting if the other passenger have their seat fully extended position and you need the toilet.

Quickly after sitting down, a Steward made their way though the Club World Cabin handing out glasses of Champagne. On the seat, when we arrived there was a pair of Noise-cancelling headphones, White Company blanket, mattress topper and pillow as our flight was overnight.

BA White Company Amenity kit

Also we were handed a new style BA Amenity Kit made by the White Company of London. This Amenity kit came in a small, black leather effect holdal. It resembles to me a large, make up bag with contents including a Toothbrush, Toothpaste, eye mask, flight socks, Elemis toiletries such as lip balm, moisturizer etc.

British Airways 777 Business Class Dining

The Food in CW are all served up on Bone China Crockery accompanied by real Cutlery. Tea & Coffee are all served in China cups with saucers and all drinks served in glassware.

About an hour into our journey we were handed the In-Flight Dining Menu. These Menu’s looked similar to what you receive in a Restaurant, Club World Branding and a full description of each selection with an extensive Drinks list.

I opted for a Smoked Salmon starter, it came up beautifully presented with a small side salad and dressing. I found this dish tasty and certainly a massive step up from any food I had ever experienced on a plane before.

Premium dining on board – Smoked Salmon Starter

For my Mains I opted for the Steak with a Peppercorn sauce, New Potatoes & Seasonal Vegetables with a bread roll of choice & Butter. This arrived promptly and looked on First Impressions very appetising. The Steak was a disappointment, to me it tasted just like Braising Steak which had been boiled in Liquid, not the quality of steak i expected in this class of cabin.

For Dessert I choose the Milk Chocolate with a Passion Fruit crisp with Chocolate sauce. This was Tasty and the Passion Fruit crisp refreshing. Very well presented accompanied by a lovely glass of white wine.

Tea or Coffee was served during the Dinner Service and Drink orders taken.

Overall, my opinion of the Dinner Service was Good except for the below average steak served as part of the Main course.

The next Course due to our Flight being Overnight was the Breakfast Serving. Feeling still a little bloated from the Three course Meal the night before, Instead of a cooked Breakfast i decided to opt for the Muesli with a Berry Compote. This was pleasant and very creamy in texture. Union roast coffee was served and Orange juice.

BA 777 In-Flight Entertainment (IFE):

BA Club World In Flight Entertainment

The In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) in Business Class 777 consists of a flat screen with touch controls or can be used in conjunction with a separate controller which stores away neatly next to your seat. The controller is connected by a retractable cable so can be a little temperamental to use so I stuck to using the touch screen for most of the journey.

You have a selection of hundreds of films, Documentaries, Music, Audio Books and episodes of popular TV series to choose from. I quickly scanned the Movies section under Latest Releases and found a Movie Blockbuster just out on release in the UK. The screens in my opinion could be upgraded to a better Clarity but they served the Movies fairly well with no interruptions to service & worked seamlessly with the Noise Cancelling headphones provided.

After the Movie, I used the Popular sections and found a number of my favourite sitcom’s and even Watched clips of the Glastonbury Music Festival.

I also used the IFE screen to watch the Flight Map regularly which displayed our route and our current location. It’s interesting to fly above countries of the world you have never visited and good to see the Flight duration left until destination.

Morning View from my CW Window

With only a few hours left until we touched down at Male Airport in the Maldives, the Sun was rising and the distant sounds and smells of Breakfast filled the cabin. A flurry of activity from the Cabin Crew taking Tea & Coffee orders and then Breakfast requests.

Breakfast was over fairly quickly and we settled into our last hour until our destination. This last hour I found to be a great opportunity to get ready for arrival. I got changed in the CW toilets which are of a good size and have quality Elemis Hand wash and Hand Moisturisers. A quick freshen up and I was ready for the Maldives.

On arrival, the Club World Cabin passengers were allowed to leave the plane first to board the airport shuttle buses.

Our Opinion / Verdict on the BA 777 Business Class

This was our first ever BA Club World Business Class flight taken on the 777,  the highest class of cabin we had flown up to this point was BA Premium Economy. We had extremely high expectations of the Club World experience and on the whole we would recommend CW to anyone flying Long Haul.

However, we did take a closer look at the Cabin interiors in Business Class and our Seating areas and we did notice signs of ageing and wear and tear. Unfortunately, the Boeing 777-200 aircraft used on this route are getting fairly old now and we believe the CW cabins could have been fitted nearly 15 years ago. We also believe British airways are investing in a Cabin refresh but only on some aircraft at present.

The Dining experience was Good but let down by the standard of our Mains. We also believe a new Club World Dining Menu has been introduced so that would be a positive improvement.

The Cabin crew on our Outbound journey were Professional, Courteous and competent in their role. However, we found completely the opposite on our return flight from the Cabin Crew. On our Return, No real apologies were given to passengers for the lack of choice of preferred main meals & missing amenity kits. The Cabin Manager only asked for feedback of the service down one aisle of passengers which was poor in our opinion.

The seating layout and facing backwards whilst flying was a first for us. The middle pair seats if not seated next to your partner in our opinion was uncomfortable as you are sitting immediately next to a stranger for 11 hours.

We paid 200k Avios points plus £1200 in Taxes for our Return flights. The average cash price of these tickets were £5500. We feel for that amount of money we should have received a better service from the airline crew on board on our Return journey, food standards should be excellent at all times and in stock for all Business class passengers or atleast allow pre-ordering of meals on all routes. The plane interiors need to refreshed or maybe use newer planes on premium routes like the Maldives.

British Airways 777 Business Class is a good product and far superior to BA Premium Economy. We would recommend Business Class to anyone despite of some drawbacks.

Conrad Maldives Seaplane Male Transfer 2019 Review

Conrad Maldives Male Seaplane 2019 Review

All Customers staying at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island use a Seaplane as the transfer to and from the resort. The Conrad Maldives Seaplane Transfer takes approximately 40 mins from Male seaplane departure port to Rangali island in total.

Before departing the Seaplane Port, all guests staying on Rangali island receive Complimentary Conrad Lounge access at Male Airport. The Lounge is very welcomed after a long flight from London for us and introduced us to the start of our Conrad Maldives experience in Luxury – Read our Full Review of the Conrad Male airport Lounge by clicking here > CONRAD MALDIVES MALE AIRPORT LOUNGE

Conrad Male Airport Lounge

We only waited approx 45 x minutes in the Luxurious Conrad Lounge before a staff member made us aware that our transfer was ready to the Seaplane Port / Dock. We quickly got all our personal belongings together and was handed a complimentary Tote bag each containing two bottles of water, earplugs and some information documents. The water came in very handy on the hot seaplane journey.

Conrad Maldive male airport mini bus transfer to the Seaplane Port.
Mini Bus transfer from Lounge to Seaplane

What appeared only a few minutes on a transfer mini bus we arrived at the Seaplane Port. To be honest, it would of probably been quicker to walk from the lounge to the departure port but the Conrad look after all guests very well so prefer to transport all guests at every opportunity.

When you exit the transfer bus directly outside the Seaplane Port, you enter through closed doors into an air-conditioned waiting area where you wait In-line for your Seaplane departure allocation. There were seats in the waiting area but were all taken when we arrived so we waited in a queue for approximately 5 minutes.

After about five minutes, a Staff member of the Port waves you on in the direction of your Seaplane Dock zone and off you go…

Conrad Maldives Seaplane port air conditioned building.
View of the waiting area – Seaplane Port

Outside the seaplane waiting zone was very hot and sunny and sunglasses definitely required. We walked down a wooden Jetty in a long queue of passengers passing lots of Parked up Maldivian air Seaplanes.

All Seaplanes have individual parking zones in the dock. The air is filled with the sounds of Propellors and the tinge in the air of diesel fumes. Whilst walking along the wooden jetty walkway we viewed a Seaplane coming into land on the water in the distance which is an exciting moment as we felt our dream Maldives experience was really about to start now.

Your luggage is transported for you to the Seaplane so once again all the little details are taken care of by Conrad for all guests.

Transmaldivian seaplane port jetty to awaiting seaplane.
Conrad Guests making their way to the Seaplane

As you arrive at your allocated Transmaldevian Seaplane, you wait In line while passengers make their way up a small set of steps into the Cabin. One of the Transmaldevian aircrew help you up the small set of steps into the planes rear cabin.

This rear door is the only entrance and exit on the plane. You have to duck your head down when your at the top of the steps in order to not bump your head.

All seats are on Transmaldevian Seaplanes are unallocated, so first come, first serve. No Business Class or V.I.P treatment here…

The Transmaldivian Seaplanes are small and probably can only transport about 18 – 20 passengers at a time. The Cabin felt humid, slightly cramped and the seats a little bit uncomfortable with two seats per side of the centre aisle. These minor points are quickly forgotten as this is part of the Maldives experience, to travel in a Seaplane to an amazing resort.

View of Transmaldivian seaplane pilots perparing for take off.

We were one of the last passengers to board the Seaplane, by the time we boarded there were only a few seats left towards the front of the Seaplane.

We strongly recommend if you experience a Transmaldivian Seaplane to try to board the seaplane first as you can choose which seats you prefer, we would strongly recommend the rear seats of the cabin.

The Cabin is not air-conditioned, the only form of cooling within the interior are two small fans located near the ceiling at the front of the cabin pointing towards the rear of the cabin. If you sit at the front you get very little cooling as the fans are set up high and the air flow makes its way above you to the back.

If you manage to be seated towards the rear of the cabin, you receive more of the cooling airflow at the back, we also found it quieter towards the rear of the cabin.

Your luggage is stored at the rear of the cabin in full view of all passengers. Your luggage is secured in using securing ropes and a Transmaldevian crew member sits at the rear of the cabin next to your luggage for the entire journey.

The Pilots ran through a Series of Pre-Flight checks while the engines are running. This is noisy and you do start to smell the engines revving up. Lots of the passengers at this point put in their supplied earplugs.

As we were seated at the front of the cabin, we could view for the entire journey how the pilot’s operate the controls of the seaplane as there are no door to the Cockpit. The pilot’s uniform comprised off shorts and short sleeved pilot shirts and customary Sunglasses.

After about 10 x minutes off pre-flight checks and safety briefing by the Co-pilot, we started to slowly move away from the jetty zone and out into the main waters of the Port. At this point the engines died down whilst we awaited for another Seaplane to take off in view which was exciting to see through the small Windows of the cabin.

Whilst the other Seaplane was taking off, suddenly our engines burst into action, running faster then we started to make our way to the water runway area slowly at first. Then the engines revs dropped down again and it felt like we were just coasting along awaiting approval to take off. Then suddenly again, the engines burst into action, propellors rotating at full speed and we started to gain speed and a few minutes later we were facing the direction of take off.

Without stopping this time we moved across the water slowly at first picking up speed and then faster, with lots of cross checking going on by the co-pilot we gained speed and after a minute or two later the Seaplane started to lift off the water. At last we were finally taking off with everyone looking out of the windows pointing towards the port.

The Conrad Seaplane transfer takes approximately 40 x minutes to reach Rangali Island. I believe that some seaplane transfers to Rangali can stop off at resorts before your final destination. We were happy to be flying direct and no Stop off’s this time for us.

For about 10 x mins into the journey we appeared to fly at fairly low altitude, this allowed us to view small islands, fishing boats and even sharks In detail. Then the Seaplane ascended to a higher altitude for the next 20 x mins or so.

View of shallow sea on sepalne
Shallow Sea Views / Coral Reefs from the window

We then descended again for the last 10 x mins of our flight. We could see more, small uninhabited islands, coral reefs and lagoons and shoals of fish. Most passengers after about 20 minutes had accustomed themselves to the seaplane journey and started to chat and take lots of pictures.

At the next point in the journey after about 35 minutes, our Seaplane banked right. We were now in view of our destination – Rangali Island. The plane appeared to bank round to the right again giving us a breath-taking view of the entire island/s, it really is a truly beautiful location what we viewed before us.

Rangali island walkway spanning between both Islands.
View of the walkway spanning the two islands

The seaplane started to descend and we were getting closer and closer to landing on the water. You could almost feel The excitement in the cabin at this point.

The landing of the Seaplane was very smooth with no bumps on the water at all. Our Seaplane then turned towards the Rangali walkway spanning the two islands and further round to come into dock.

What we observed from our window seats were the Conrad Hosts all lined up on the dock waiting to greet us. This was a first for us, to be greeted by waving Conrad hosts was an introduction to the impeccable service we received during our stay.

Rangali island Conrad Hosts greeting you.
Conrad Hosts waiting for you at the Rangali seaplane Dock.

You are assisted off the Seaplane by the Transmaldivian staff members and your Personal host is awaiting you on the Jetty. After a quick introduction by your host, we were escorted to a to an air-conditioned area on the walkway and handed a cooling iced drink.

Your luggage is taken off the Seaplane for you and transported by buggy to the main islands reception area.

Our personal host greeted us by our name with a friendly smile and inquired how our Seaplane journey experience was for us. They took our hand luggage and carried this to the main reception area for us walking along the walkway which spans between the two island’s.

The Conrad reception area is located at the end of the wooden walkway on the main island. When you arrive at reception your host finds you a set of chairs to sit on whilst explaining details of the facilities on the two island’s and arranges for staff members to take your luggage to your allocated room.

After about 5 minutes, we were informed by our host that our room was ready at which point your escorted by buggy right to the front door of your allocated villa.

Verdict / Opinion:

The Conrad Maldives Seaplane journey is truly an experience from the minute you step aboard, to the minute you exit. Some of the views from the window of the Seaplane are simply breathtaking and made the journey for us unforgettable.

Yes, the Seaplane could have better facilities like decent air conditioning. Yes, the seats could have been more comfortable but this is a Seaplane and we would imagine most Seaplanes are the same and basic in design.

We believe there are plans to install air conditioning to some Transmaldivian seaplanes now which would be a great benefit to all passengers.

The cost per person, return is currently $590 + taxes, expensive but this is the Maldives!

To visit the Maldives, most resorts are only accessible by Seaplane but by flying this way, this just adds to the entire excitement & experience of the Maldives.

If you ever get the chance to experience a Seaplane, you won’t regret it…

Have you ever experienced the Transmaldivian Seaplane journey, we would live to hear your thoughts & comments below.

Umbrellas in Glass to Ceiling Hallway

As you enter through your Security card accessed front door, you enter a light & airy hallway with floor to ceiling glass which looks out into your private rear garden. Located at the end of the hallway is an Umbrella stand & two Umbrellas. We found this amusing as were in the Sunny Maldives but to our surprise on a few occasions we actually needed those Umbrellas due to a few, short, early evening showers. Located off the Hallway this lead through to the largest Living area we have ever seen in a hotel / resort room. Off the hallway was located an amazing bathroom area, a large wardrobe area and a separate toilet.

Bathroom area:

The bathroom area consisted of two separate, freestanding marble wash hand basins, mirrors, lighting and complimentary Luxury toiletries. Quality egyptian cotton hand towels with bath towels stored underneath. Also supplied are toothbrush holders, hand tissues etc.

External Rain Fall Shower:

Off the bathroom, there were a set of sliding doors leading to a paved, patio area with the most amazing Rainfall shower. This area is part of a very private garden area with high walls around the perimeter. To shower in the open gardens is a liberating experience with only birds in the trees as your audience. The shower area is stocked with luxury, organic essential oils shower gels & shampoo / conditioner.

Bathing Pavillion:

At the rear of the Private Gardens we viewed a large, under Canopy Spa Bath officially known as the Bathing Pavilion. The bathing pavilion is surrounded by lush greenery, trees, bushes and exotic flowers. The pavilion steps up from the surrounding pathways into the largest and most luxurious spa bath we have ever seen. We later found out that you can pay for Room service to fill the bath for you including essential oils…

Wardrobe area:

The entire Beach Villa is air-conditioned throughout making it comfortable and a welcome break to cool down from the hot Maldives sun. Off the hallway we discovered a large wardrobe area separated with sliding wooden doors containing a safe. This area held lots of additional quality bed linen, towels, bathrobes, slippers and a Complimentary Conrad wicker beach bag. The wardrobe area is extremely large and easily accommodates three adults clothes and luggage. To find this wardrobe area with its own air conditioning was a great benefit, it kept our clothes cool and a relaxing area to get changed in straight from the shower.

Main Living area:

As we entered the Villa’s main living area, we were surprised to see two sofas. One a chaise lounge and the other a Sofa bed (Sleeps two). This area can be separated by a movable curtain for Privacy, excellent for children or friends / family staying with you. The BV can accommodate up to Three adults or Two adults & Two children.

The main living area contained the largest, Super king sized bed with excellent quality feather pillows and Egyptian cotton bedding that we have ever encountered. The bed linen gave the feeling of real luxury and the bed was super comfortable. We always had a great nights sleep whilst on our stay.

Coffee / Refrigerator area:

A small alcove area off the main living area contained a small, under counter refrigerator filled with min bar sized alcoholic and a mixture of canned soft drinks. Two large, Conrad branded water bottles, carton of milk and a selection of chocolate bars. These items except the water / milk are all chargeable to your room. A Nespresso coffee maker with a large selection of complimentary coffee pods which are replenished everyday by house keeping. A 32 inch LCD TV kept us entertained during our stay with free cable TV channels. You can even order Room Service from the TV set and receive personal messages instantly. We used the free internet wi-Fi service complimentary in all rooms in the resort to watch online movies of our choice.

The Beach Villa has a separate Toilet area including soft down lighting, luxury toiletries and air-conditioned. This area also held under counter storage with addition a hand towels, flannels etc.

Additional Facilities:

As standard every room at Rangali Island also provides a DVD / CD player, hairdryer, Laundry service which is chargeable to your room. House keeping was of an excellent standard and our Villa was cleaned twice a day. Items were replenished on each visit such as our water bottles, coffee capsules, milk and fresh fruits.

As you exit the main living areas sliding patio doors we found ourselves stepping out onto a canopy covered patio area consisting of two, cushioned wooden sun loungers & side tables. The sliding patio doors are also opened from the garden side by swiping your room key card on the reader which was very convenient when wanting to enter your Villa from the Beach. Your private gardens are full of coconut trees, bushes and flowers in bloom. On many occasions we saw fruit bats fly between the trees and other exotic birds. We followed the pathway through the gardens to find at the end the most jaw dropping, fluffy white sandy beach and breath-taking blue lagoon awaiting us. We had finally found Paradise on earth!

Beach & Sun Loungers & Warm water blue lagoon

Private beach / Lagoon:

Our Beach Villa was located in the low 200’s. After researching previous reviews, we both agreed for us that this location on the entire Island was perfect. The low 200’s accommodation side of the island faces into a beautiful, shallow blue lagoon. It’s extremely private on this side of the island and you face towards the ocean. As you walk into the lagoon waters you feel just how warm the water really is in the Maldives. In the far distance we could see the Muraka, the first in the world, under water suite under construction.

Private Beach View – Paradise on earth.

Every Beach Villa has conveniently located at the end of your private gardens on the beach, two wooden Sun Loungers and cushions under either a thatched canopy or moveable canopy and small, side table for drinks. A waiter visits twice a day on the beach taking drink orders.

The lagoon is fairly shallow and we could easily walk for a many minutes until the water reached our shoulder height. The water is so warm and clear in the lagoon that we felt we just didn’t want to leave. We noticed on many occasions shoals of small fish swim close to the shore. As we ventured further out we noticed the most beautiful, large fish swimming past our legs. On some occasions we noticed giant Manta Rays swim past in the lagoon.

Giant Manta Rays swim by in the early evening.

To the left along our beach, small boat excursions leave the shore to take people to local dive sites for Scuba diving. The Mandhoo Restaurant was located about five minutes walk but not in sight due to its location around the natural curve of the island. Clean beach towels were left on our Sun Loungers every morning and extra towels left in storage units along the beach. Our host visited us everyday during our stay to ensure everything was to our satisfaction and to keep us informed of special events on the island. I took advantage of the free snorkelling equipment hire during our stay and spent many hours exploring the lagoon.

Conrad Maldives Breakfast / Afternoon Tea

When staying on Rangali Island you have two restaurants to choose from everyday for your Breakfast. We used everyday during our stay the Atoll Market due to its close location to our Villa, literally 3 x mins walk. The Atoll Market serves breakfast daily from 6.00am with a wide selection of hot and cold foods for breakfast Inc sausages, bacon, various versions of cooked eggs. A chef will cook you eggs to order whatever your preference is and cook pancakes / waffles to order while you wait.

Another chef cooks to order omelette with any fillings you request, a juice bar, cold meats, jams, toast, breads, fresh fruits, yogurt etc. Waiter service shows you to your chosen table and takes your order for Tea or Coffee.

As Hilton Diamond members all our Breakfasts were completely free including free afternoon tea at the Mandhoo restaurant starting at 3pm everyday. Afternoon Tea included finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, canape’s and tea, coffees and soft drinks.

The Water Villa also known as the OWV – Over Water Villa accommodation is 86 sq m or 925 sq ft of pure luxury. We managed to upgrade from our Beach Villa to a Water Villa for the last night of our stay.

We paid $185 to upgrade for the one night, it was a special treat and we felt we couldn’t stay in the Maldives without trying out a Water Villa at least once. The average cost per night for this type of accommodation is around £800-£900 a night. Considering we didn’t pay out any cash for our Beach Villa, we felt paying $185 justifiable.

Unfortunately, Rangali Island is exempt from the Hilton Diamond members conditions that you will receive an upgraded room where available. I believe exceptions to this rule have been made in the past, our Tip would be to try staying here during the quieter months of the year for a better chance of bagging that elusive free upgrade.

After securing our night in the Water Villa via our Personal host, we were advised to get all our personal belongings together and Pack all our luggage. Our host came and found us on the Beach and advised us that someone will be calling at our BV at midday. Right on time, the doorbell rang and a very friendly member staff asked for our luggage and bags. He took everything for us to an electric buggy parked up on the path. We were asked if we’re ready to move or would be prefer later, with anticipation and excitement we were ready and promptly jump in the buggy for the short ride to our Water Villa.

It was fun to ride in the buggy and after about five minutes and lots of twists and turns down different pathways and across the bridge spanning between the two islands, we found ourselves outside our new accommodation on the quiet island.

Wooden pathway leading to the over water villa.
Walkway to Over Water Villa

We arrived and parked up at the end of the wooden walkway to the entrance of our new accommodation. Our luggage was taken into the Villa for us and an explanation given of all the new Facilities.

The Water Villa does certainly have the “Wow” factor. The main living areas are all covered in wooden panelling, you certainly get a feeling of luxury staying here. Our Villa had a large curved sofa, a glass desk facing out of a window to an amazing view of the ocean.

A section in the floor was made of glass, we stood there for at least five minutes staring at all the fish swimming under our feet.

Living area in the OWV

A nice surprise was to find awaiting us again a bottle of champagne on ice, chocolates and fruit. When we evaluated the differences between our Beach Villa to the Water Villa, we found that basic facilities were roughly the same though.

The bathroom consisted of two, separate marble round bowls set onto wooden units. We got the same standard of toiletries as before. The biggest benefit was definitely the window facing towards the lagoon and the ocean facing bath.

Over Water Villa Sun Deck:

Now this is where we noticed the big difference between the two Villa’s we had the pleasure of staying in. When you open the sliding doors from your main living area, we were taken back by the breath-taking view out into the blue lagoon.

The sundeck on the OWV consisted of a small, plunge pool at the end of the deck. We found this luxury to cool off in the hot, Maldives sun. Steps lead down into the Lagoon from the sun deck. This was a wow factor for us, we had never imagined staying at a hotel that you can walk from your room into the ocean. We swam with fish, watched Manta Rays glide by and just relaxed in the warm waters of the lagoon.

The Sun deck contains two wooden loungers with cushions, a Sun umbrella canopy, table and chairs and the plunge pool. At night, the sun deck is lit by recessed lighting, we found it so relaxing to sit at our table with a Coffee watching the sun go down. Privacy was good at the Water Villa, our Sun deck was cordoned off to each side by a wooden walls on stilts out of the lagoon.

Our Verdict: Beach Villa vs Water Villa

Firstly, we had to pinch ourselves regularly to remind ourselves that we were lucky enough to be staying in the Maldives, let alone being able to stay in two different accommodations in a 5 Star Resort here.

The main differences between the two villas has to be the Sun deck in the Water Villa and that you are actually staying in accommodation on stilts just above and in the ocean. The Sun deck really has that extra special feel and the ocean views are just stunning.

However, if you look at the Square footage of both Villas as a comparison then the Beach Villa wins hands down. You get nearly 80% more space in the BV for your money. Plus it’s cheaper, if you pay cash then your looking at an approx difference of 40% cheaper for the BV.

We found the Facilities in both Villas similar except for the Sun deck in the OWV. Even though we loved walking down steps into the lagoon, we also loved being on an amazing beach in one minute at the end of our private garden in the BV. You do sacrifice the beach in the Water Villa.

We think most people would always choose the Water Villa over the Beach Villa. However, if you were looking for best value for your money then we would definitely say the Beach Villa was the winner due to the price per night. If you ever get the chance to stay at the Conrad Maldives in a Beach Villa, we would definitely recommend enquiring about an upgrade to a Water Villa like we did just to experience the two accommodations.

Skint Traveller Cost Breakdown:

We stayed in the Beach Villa for 7 x Nights plus upgrading to a Water Villa for 1 x night.

7 x Nights in a Conrad Rangali Island BV can be purchased for approx £3500. The standard Hilton rate for this Villa is $687 per night but you can usually find a cheaper deal using one of the many Online Travel Agents advertising on the web.

7 x Nights in a Water Villa costs approx £700 a night so nearly an additional £1400 more than a BV so nearer £5000 for a week’s stay.

We paid for 7 x nights in the Beach Villa all on Hilton Honour points for our stay. The amount of points we used came to 570,000. That is 95,000 HH points per night but if your a Hilton Honors Silver status member or above, you get 1 x night free per every 5 x Nights. So normally 665,000 points.

Every customer Staying on Rangali Island has to pay for the Seaplane Transfer to and from Male international airport. This costs an eye watering £445 each so £890 Return for us two.

Our final bill came to £1430 including the Upgrade to the Water Villa, thats including all our food and the Seaplane Transfers. We were chuffed to only pay less than 1.5k for that package as a cash purchase cost would of been nearer £6500.

Our bill was only possible by us having Hilton Diamond status allowing us Free Breakfasts everyday and free afternoon tea. We did enquire about the cost of breakfast by cash and we were quoted £140 a day.

We strongly recommend that you acquire Hilton Gold or above status when Staying at Rangali Island to save a lot of money. Hilton Gold can be acquired for Free through taking out the Amex Platinum card. If you are interested in aquring Hilton Gold for Free, contact us and we will send you all the details.
